Summary:

Top seeded Bulgaria was among 7 other nations who advanced to the PAW Federation Cup Quarter-Finals that will be played in July (after Wimbledon), when the WTA Fed Cup QF's begin. The other nations moving into the last eight were Australia, Indonesia, Argentina, Canada, Italy, Hong Kong and Germany.

Indonesia [4] d. Great Britain

The most versatile team in the competition – Indonesia, which currently possesses 3 top 10 players including the number one sandg, achieved the highest average total score amongst all 17 countries, to edge out a very gallant Great Britain whose performances from alwayshingis and andrew_uk gave the 4th seeds more than they could expect.

Germany d. Belgium [5]

The local derby in Brussels turned out to be some mismatch. With the Germans – in particular Matthias and Frongie (who both were 2 of the top 10’s best individual performers) producing a stranglehold on the tie after day 1. With better play from crazillo on day 2, the Germans ended up dominating the tie with a 45 point victory to complete a very satisfying weekend for the underdogs.

Italy d. South Africa [2]

The big shocker of the round, unheralded Italy came from practically nowhere to eliminate the 2nd seeded South Africa. After trailing by 16 points on day 1, the team captain marcobarella along with his charges – The Monarch Butterfly and late entry yoyoyoyo played with nothing to lose and were rewarded, finishing with a comprehensive 15.5 margin in Cape Town.

Australia [3] d. USA

Lack of preparation and team patriotism (their captain didn’t even show up!) cost the US team who were late arrivals in Townsville. Australia, steered by captain SpikeyAidanm swept past the Americans on both day 1 and day 2. The Aussies won by 35.7 pts and meet Germany next.

Canada [7] d. Israel

One of the closely contested ties of the round, the key stars for Canada’s victory were Canuck_Fan and captain polishprodigy. Israel were disadvantaged due to the late withdrawal of in form nitsansh combined with the rather lacklustre performances from both levos and PointBlank. Captain Nir said he was very disappointed with his team’s spirit.

Bulgaria [1] d. Singapore

Top seeded Bulgaria proved why indeed they deserve top status with a classy 39.8 triumph over the dangerous Singapore side. All around consistency was the secret to Bulgaria’s weekend, with Hantuchov, ghosts and bgbgbg all scoring highly. Je_ne_sias_quoi, the highest ranked player of both teams failed to adjust to the conditions in Sofia and was hampered by injury.

Hong Kong d. Croatia [8] & Serbia

Rookie Hong Kong shocked the PAW world with a stunning and comprehensive defeat over both Croatia and Serbia. Late entry jrm along with E.Dementieva and Edman all notched 100+ totals to bring the inexperienced team through to the Quarter-Finals.

Argentina d. Spain [6]

The most exciting of the round by far! The visiting Argentineans completed a 0.5 extremely narrow deficit over Spain, whose top player and captain bbypk performed outstandingly on both days. The solid temperament of Catriel along with the flashy AGUSTIN were the two key recipes for Argentina’s win.

QUARTER-FINALS:

Bulgaria [1] vs Argentina [in Sofia]
Indonesia [4] vs Canada [7] [in Jakarta]
Germany vs Australia [3] [in Adelaide]
Hong Kong vs Italy [in Milan]

PRE-Quarter-Final betting odds

Bulgaria – Argentina: 1.25 - 3.25
Indonesia – Canada: 1.20 - 3.35
Germany - Australia: 2.50 - 1.60
Hong Kong – Italy: 2.25 - 1.65

really?
what kind of rule is this?`
okay, maybe we can face a unseeded team in SF or Final
we could play in Leipzig, to promote the Bid for the Olympic Games 2012

I don´t like this rule eithe but it´s not my task to judge about his decisions.... IMO, it would be fair but hey, next year all 3 - 4 germas are top-10 and then we will play one time in everyones´hometown or big cities*lol*...

A few notes how the Fed Cup QF will work, I will be sending a pm to the captain (ie - the captain of the first round tie) to pick a squad of 2-5 players. The captain should confirm with their players that they are available to play...

A new rule in the QF will be that the captain will ONLY be able to replace PAW's of their team members that become invalid (via a withdrawal), not all of players in R1 used up their 16 picks, so in the QF ties where there will be 8 picks, the supplemantry picks again are important.

Hey Crazillo/matthias

regarding home/away ties:

It works like the Davis Cup format, if GER - BEL's first meeting was in BEL, so the next meeting btw the two countries will be in GER and that process continues. It's the first year we are running it coutnries vs countries, so the unseeded teams are "disadvantaged" but not in the long term

btw, if you beat Australia ( - ), you will have a home semi vs Italy/HKG.
