Re: Fed Cup 2008 format and schedule
I've been wondering for a while about the format with only 9 teams, because I wanted the 6 World Group I teams to have some sort of advantage, and at the same time I really felt like giving a chance to the other teams to have a shot at the title.
Keeping the Round Robin + Main Draw format, that's what I came out with.
World Group I
From the 1st to the 5th leg, the World Group I 6 teams will play in a Round Robin.
The top 2 teams will qualify directly for the main draw semifinals, which are also worth a 2009 World Group I spot.
The 6th and last team will be eliminated, but will be able to fight for a play-off spot to be back to the World Group I for the 2009 season.
Teams ranked from #3 to #5 will play the main draw quarterfinals, together with the World Group II winner, in the 6th leg.
The 4 main draw semifinalists will keep their World Group I spot for the 2009 season.
The 2 teams who will lose in the quarterfinals will face each other in the 7th leg: the winner will keep the World Group I spot, the loser will face the qualifying wnner in the 8th leg final play-off.
World Group II
From the 1st to the 3rd leg, the World Group II 3 teams will play in a Round Robin.
The top team will qualify for the World Group I quarterfinals.
The last 2 teams will fight for a play-off spot in the qualifying round against the World Group I Round Robin last team, from the 5th to the 7th leg.
