Last time Vika played something close to her best tennis was the wimbledon qf. Let's hope the big stage brings it out of her again, if she plays well she can win.

Serena has off days at slams too, right?

Honestly I'm expecting a beatdown. Hopefully Vika can at least put up a decent perfomance and get 6+ games. I'm actually really looking forward to the match, and even if/when she loses, she got some revenge over Dulko which means there are some positives to take from this tournament. She got an awful draw, but she just has to make the most of it.

Well in the context of a major, for me the problem is for Vika to play her best when facing opponents so as Serena and many other girls having that faculty to blow her off a court...

Against other players she can really bring a good game (angles, mix, spins etc...) but against these closed category she doesn't attempt as much, this is what perhaps increases the % of being teared down... certainly an apprehension/anticipation that she has of taking a beat down who effectively transforms into reality and doesn't allow her to just go for her shots like she would vs. many other girls...

I'm thinking about Victoria early 2009, free, liberate, assessing her authority relentlessly off the gorund, who didn't have all these worries and if IMO this Victoria appears Saturday this match could be very very competitive but if it's the Victoria of the recent times who kind of digresses into herself and accepts the/a domination well this could be quick.

Unfortunately the match against Dulko resurfaced that Vika who lets her emotions, temper or whatever get through her clarity of thoughts and this is really really not reassuring before a match versus Serena.

Génie - Victoria - Kristina.

Wow good win over Dulko. Groundstroke stats don't look too good though.

Please don't get slaughtered by Serena.

She needs to do her best to mix things up. If she tries to go blow for blow from the baseline... she's screwed. She needs to try to get to net, hit drop shots, and move Serena as much as possible. If she uses the same "strategy" as in Toronto... she won't win more than 4 games.

She was injured in toronto....

Vika has gone toe-to-toe with serena before much more successfully (see AO 2010). This Vika is underpowered meme has gotten way out of hand. Of course she has to play smart, don't just bash it into serena's backhand hitting zone, but for me it's more a matter of whether Vika can find some fluency in her own game, rather than overthinking on the strategy

oh and good luck vika! Can't believe it's not the evening match

I agree that the talk of Vika being a "pusher" is way out of hand. However, in-form Serena is clearly a player that Vika can't hang with off the ground. Kvitova, Li, and Serena all give her problems because their games undermine Vika's strengths.

If Vika tries to exclusively rally from the baseline with Serena, she will have NO chance with the way Serena is hitting the ball.

She can't let Serena get comfortable in this match if she wants any chance to even win a set.

Blame the US Open board of directors for seeding Serena acccording to her current ranking instead of taking into account her stature and recent performances. One would think that winning both Stanford and Toronto (and thus the US Open Series) would have given them a clue, but apparently not...

Even if Vika manages to hold her own against an in-form Serena during rallies (and that's a pretty big "if"), the serve still gives her opponent a significant edge. If Williams keeps serving like she did in her previous matches, it's hard to imagine Vika holding serve more often than her, regardless of tactics.

Personally, I would only consider that option if Vika were somehow able to get herself in a winning position only to end up losing the match anyway - AGAIN. Like, you know, that time when she blew a 6-4 4-0 lead in a grand slam quarterfinal. I'm not sure I could handle another one of those.

Confusion will be my epitaph
