Regla Torres Press Conference
Charleston, South Carolina: Regla Torres appeared in a controversial press conference this morning announcing that Charleston will be the last tournament where she will play as a Spanish national.
The Spanish No. 1 in Charleston for the 13th anniversary of the event where she is a two-time champion confirmed rumours and laid to rest speculation that she was to be taking citizenship in another country.
From next week, she will be representing Italy. "It's been a difficult decision. But one I made because it's where my future is," Torres said. She will be settling in Lake Como with her ballet dancer boyfriend who is a principal at Teatra alla Scala in nearby Milan.
"It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, not just this year," Torres said. The move comes as a slap in the face for former Spanish No. 1 and pretender to the Spanish Fed Cup captaincy, Vittoria Perez, who notoriously and in an unpopular move dropped Torres from the first Fed Cup rounds earlier this year.
Torres regained the No. 1 spot in Spain after a strong start to the year 2012. "I will definitely miss Rita, Candela, Marta and all my other compatriots but unfortunately it's a decision I had to make. I wish them luck and success in Fed Cup and on the tour. I'm sure I'll be seeing and speaking to them in tour events."
