Re: AA suited - The Alexa Anastidis thread

Most FWTT players are still enjoying a well-deserved break during the off-season, but some eager girls simly can't wait until the new season starts. One of them is Greek prospect Alexandra Anastidis. Good morning, Ms. Anastidis.

Good morning, but please just call me Alexandra, or better yet simply Alexa.

OK, Alexa. How come you are so eager to get going again already?

Well I was on a good streak the last couple of weeks of the season. I actually wished it hadn't been interrupted, but it was good to travel back to Greece and see my family though.

How often do you get to see your family? It musn't be easy for a girl your age to be on the tour.

To be honest, it was the first time I saw my family since I started on the Juniors Tour. Because apart from being on the tour, I usually spend the rest of the time in Belgium where my coach Bieselke resides. But I can't say I have been homesick too much, Bieselke supports me a lot and I can practically discuss about anything with him. And even the Tour organizations are aware what an impact it has on the players' personal life to be on the road all the time. Especially in the junior FWTT, a lot of mental support was provided to be able to deal with this all.

If we look back one year, nobody in international tennis had ever even heared about you. How do you explain this rapid development?

Well I have been playing tennis for a long time and I already was a well-known name on the Greek Junior circuit. However I am a very petite girl and I was often simply overpowered by much less talented girls. Luckily for me, coach Bieselke still spotted my talent and raw potential while he was on vacation in Thessaloniki where i was playing a local tournament. He gave me some pointers on how to use the opponents strength to my advantage and fully use my technical capacities. I went on to win the tournament that week and for me it was clear that I would like to work with Bieselke from that moment on. Bieselke was quite enthusiastic about a possible cooperation as well. Only thing left to do was to convince my dad that he should let his only daughter take off to Belgium alone at my young age.

How did you manage to convince him in the end?

We normally do a family skiing trip in the Alps during March each year, however I managed to convince my dad to take me to Belgium this year instead to meet Bieselke and check out the surroundings where I'd be living. And once we met with Bieselke, my dad was pretty quickly overwon by his charm and professional attitude. He even already got me pre-enlisted in a local International School who were well prepared for dealing with students that aren't able to attend all classes. Also the fact that I'd be in the more rural province of Limburg, did a lot for my dad since he isn't really keen on big cities.

And the fairytale commenced right there?

I wouldn't call it a fairytale to be honest. I needed time to adjust to a more professional way of playing tennis and the humongous time spend on-court and the gym (because my coach did think I had to improve my own strength) almost got the better of me. But once I saw the pay-off by winning more and more matches, it got easier to bare.

You switched from the Juniors tour quite quickly? Why did you decide to switch so fast?

The philosophy behind that is that you'll learn more from playing against a good player then by beating a fellow junior player. And in the end I think my results have been quite good, so I wouldn't speak of a too early switch.

You're results haven't been bad at all indeed; a 27-16 W/L record in singles, one singles final and 2 doubles finals. Did you even remotely expect this?

Not at all, I would even have been scared to dream about such a career start. Especially the good run in Cincinatti was a good boost and beating top players like Yanina and Ziyi really felt good.

Any downsides/regrets about the past season?

Not really, I don't think I can blame myself for anything. I dislike the 0-3 score in finals until now though, both doubles finals were lost because I choked, in the singles finals I was simply overclassed by Ruflina, all though the score sheet might make someone who didn't see the game think it was a close game. It's a mental thing I ll need to work up on while I grow up. Same thing goes for my 0-3 record against Samantha Soren. She just has such presence on court, that I feel intimidated and forget to focus on my game.

What do you want to achieve in 2012?

While bieselke and me agreed that we won't set standards too high for the season. I have no ranking points to defend until Wimbledon, so I just am going to try to climb the rankings as much as possible until then and see from there. Though I must admit that I would love to get rid of that 0-3 in Finals, doesn't matter if it would be in singles or doubles.

Talking about doubles, some critics say that for a girl your age and physique, it would be better to focus solely on singles.

I completely disagree. Although I am not the strongest player out there from a pure a physical strength point of view, I feel comfortable enough to stay that my stamina is one of the best on the tour. Plus, I simply enjoy playing doubles too much. That's why I am so happy that Coco (red. Cornelia Du Preez) asked me to double together during the upcoming season.

Will the two of you be playing together the entire season?

I certainly hope so, although we probably would make an excemption if Nthamangela Mbangu would invite either of us to double with her during her farewell tour. I haven't talked that through with Coco yet, but I certainly would allow Coco the honor of playing with Nthama.

Anything else you're looking forward too in 2012?

THE OLYMPICS ofcourse. Really going to try my best to qualify for London. too bad there is no other Greek player on the professional tour. This means I have no chance playing Olympic doubles or Fed Cup.

You did say earlier you loved being in Belgium. Would you consider playing for them?

No, sorry. I really like Belgium, but I am Greek and always will be. Simple as that.

OK, that was straight forward enough. Thanks for the interview, Alexa.
