Re: *POLL*: How many matches do you think Anna will play next year?
Some of you are hard to please!
As a fan of Chak since I watched her beat Myskina at the USO all those years ago (Myskina was my favourite for many years, so it is testament to how impressed I was by Anna that I was able to see past my "OMG my fave is losing" rage!) I have suffered with the rest of you as her career has derailed from its massive potential. Also, I may add that I already suffered the "crazy Russian has so much talent but fails to fully capitalise on it due to injuries and personal issues and then retires early" gig with Myskina, so this is a second suffering!
Buuuuuut... I think we need to be less hard on Anna - she's had a really tough time in the past couple of years, and the syncope issues must have really, really dented her confidence. In the past she has always been visibly dedicated to getting back to trying to win and be in great shape but things just have not gone her way for a consistent time period. I think stepping away and giving herself this other challenge is probably a really healthy thing for her to do, and I wish her all the best with it. Anna is clearly a bright and intelligent young woman who obviously has a set of opinions and wants to make a positive difference. Selfishly, I would love her to be back in January on the court, but I doubt that it will happen. But perhaps the mental rest from tennis and trying out another serious challenge will really help her mentally for when she does come back to competetive tennis.
I'm really sad that she's not playing and want her back on court as soon as possible, but I respect what she's doing and I wish her all the best.
