Re: Fed Cup 2008

World Group 2008 - Round 1

Israel vs Russia
Israel Tennis Center - Canada Stadium, Ramat Hasharon, Israel
02 February - 03 February 2008
Surface: Hard (Acrylic) - Outdoors
Stadium Capacity: 5000

Israel squad:

Shahar Peer
Tzipi Obziler
Keren Shlomo
Julia Glushko
Captain: Oded Jacob

Russia squad:

Maria Sharapova
Anna Chakvetadze
Dinara Safina
Elena Vesnina
Captain: Shamil Tarpischev

Russia will be looking to extend its 2-0 advantage over its newly promoted rivals, having won in the First Round in 1987 and again in 1997. Israel has the home advantage for the first time and that, combined with its current run of good form, winning its last ten Fed Cup ties, should make for an enthralling match.

Russia def. Israel 4 - 1
R1 - S. Peer (ISR) def. D. Safina (RUS) 0-6 6-2 6-2
R2 - T. Obziler (ISR) lost to M. Sharapova (RUS) 0-6 4-6
R3 - S. Peer (ISR) lost to M. Sharapova (RUS) 1-6 1-6
R4 - T. Obziler (ISR) lost to A. Chakvetadze (RUS) 4-6 2-6
R5 - T. Obziler / S. Peer (ISR) lost to D. Safina / E. Vesnina (RUS) 0-6 6-1 4-6

Re: Fed Cup 2008

I'm very surprised Israel chose hard court over clay. Isn't that giving an advantage to Russia?

Maria is the only one of the Russian squad with any form right now. And where's Sveta?

Anna should do fine against Tzipi but I see a big tussle with Shahar. As long as Masha wins her rubbers Russia only need one more so perhaps it takes some of the pressure off Anna and she might relax and play well.

Re: Fed Cup 2008

It will be like Vermont, if Maria shows up.
Anna only needs to win one match, then takes that form into tournaments.

Re: Fed Cup 2008

Go Russian Ladies! If Maria is playing at the level she did at the AO then there should be no problem here. I believe Anna can get at least one win out of this and hopefully some confidence too!

Re: Fed Cup 2008

Anna and the rest of the Russian team looked like they were having a lot of fun at that press event.

I guess being the defending champs agrees with them.

I don't understand this at all. How can Safina be chosen over Anna?
And honestly, Anna is not very good at doubles.
