Anna Chakvetadze tied up, robbed by thieves at home

Russian tennis star Anna Chakvetadze tied up, robbed by thieves at home

December 18, 2007

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russian tennis star Anna Chakvetadze was tied up by masked robbers who broke into her home Tuesday and stole money and goods worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, her father said.

Chakvetadze, ranked No. 6 and a 2007 U.S. Open semifinalist, was bound for 30 minutes in her home outside Moscow but not seriously hurt, NTV television reported.

Anna is holding up quite well," Russia tennis coach Shamil Tarpishchev told the ITAR-Tass news agency.

Six assailants approached the home before dawn, tied up a maid in another building and forced her to hand over a remote control enabling them to enter the house through the garage, Dzhamal Chakvetadze told NTV.

"They started to beat me, and I resisted. They hit me over the head with, I think, a pistol butt. It was dark," he said, taking off his cap to show his bruised scalp. "They took out a pistol and told me my child was at home -- reminded me -- and they told me to hand everything over. I did."

Police and Tarpishchev said the assailants tied up Chakvetadze and her parents, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported. Tarpishchev said the 20-year-old player "tried to resist but it was useless."

Chakvetadze's 9-year-old brother, Roman, was asleep in the house during the break-in and was not touched, Tarpishchev said.

NTV said the robbers took about $106,000 in cash, as well as jewelry and other goods worth about $200,000.

Moscow region police did not answer phone calls seeking comment.

Chakvetadze reached a career-high ranking of No. 5 in September, following her first run to a Grand Slam semifinal. She won four singles titles and about $1.4 million in prize money in 2007, her best season since turning pro in 2003"

Poor Anna. I hope everything works out for her.

It's real life, and the whole family has to somehow put it behind them and move on.
The money is not the issue. Anna will earn much more.

The question is security. Do they hire their own security. Do they move?
They have a lot of options to consider.

Re: Anna Chakvetadze tied up, robbed by thieves at home

What a horrendous crime against Anna and her family. I am glad they are okay but worry about Anna and if this will hurt her career and her already fragile mental state as a tennis player. She must feel so violated by this. Marat Safin had his Moscow apartment robbed once. But he wasn't tied up like Anna was. Anna probably thought they were going to kill her and her family. Fortunately the robbers just stole things and didn't seriously physically injure anyone. But I wonder what the psychological damge will be to Anna from this. If her father had fought back against the robbers I have no doubt that the robbers would have started shooring. Thank God Anna's father remebered he had 2 children in the house and relented to the robbers.
Anna is a Russian loyalist who has chosen to live and train in Russia when she could be living and training in another country and this is how she's repaid for her lovalty and love of Russia. It's a disgrace. I hope the thieves are caught and taken care of old school Russian style! No one should ever have to go through what Anna and her family went through. She's such a nice person and doesn't deserve to be victimized like she was. It's good that her little brother was alseep and didn't get tied up as well. I hope Anna handles being robbed as well as possible. But that's asking alot from her because she and her family were violated in such a cruel way.

They should move. Maybe even out of Russia altogether.

Re: Anna Chakvetadze tied up, robbed by thieves at home

A Russian website has provided more disturbing details of what took place. The site is in Russian, but Google provides a pretty effective translation. Click here for the full story. If any native speaker can help with a better translation, I think we would all be grateful.

The main new details are that the robbers first entered the parents' bedrooms after taking Mr. Chakvetadze by gunpoint. They then ordered Mrs. Chakvetadze to open a safe. At some point, Anna was woken but was quickly hit twice, tied up and gagged by the bandits. In what is perhaps the most scary detail yet, they supposedly told Anna that they would return. Imagine the additional fear that such a threat can cause.
According to friend Elena Vesnina, Anna still cannot bring herself to talk about the ordeal. There is also speculation that the robbers were builders very familiar with the area.

Re: Anna Chakvetadze tied up, robbed by thieves at home

Wow! This is the first time I've been able to be on in a few days and this is horrible news. Poor Anna, and her family too. This is such a violation of a person life. I feel for them and my thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.
I too hope this does not affect Anna's tennis career. Things are going good right now and she certainly did not need this. So much for that nice relaxing vacation she was hoping to have. Maybe tennis will be her refuge for awhile and will help her get through this difficult time by taking her mind off of it for awhile.
After hearing the part about them threatening to come back, I would definately consider a move, whether out of the country or not. Otherwise that thought may always be in the families mind.
Thankfully, no one was severely injured and I hope the Russian police find the people who did this and they see that justice is served.
