Re: Fed Cup 2007 - R1 vs Spain

The squad hasn't been officially named on the Fed Cup site yet but Shamil Tarpishchev has made an announcement to the All Sports news agency in Russia and Anna has said on her website that she's going to be there.

I actually think Anna might not get to play a match unless it's a dead rubber or one of the other players is injured. But at least she got picked and by making herself available she's eligible for the 2008 Olympics.

Sharapova is out of Fed Cup! She is having treatment on her right shoulder and left hamstring.

I guess that means Anna might get a match after all and presumably Dinara will be in the squad.

This is a big opportunity for Anna to play Fed Cup for Russia. I hope she takes advantage of it.

Anna played Fed Cup last year too. She's going to be the team leader soon, taking over from Lena.

but I still think they'll let Petrova and Kuznetsova to play the two single's matches though.. maybe Anna will play the double's match if it's a dead rubber..

She might not play on day 1. But I would play her with confidence.

Word on the street is Elena Vesnina's been drafted to the team. This would mean that Lena and Anna's old doubles pairing could be resurrected.

Vesnina is in terrible form now. And she was on the team for the 2nd tie last year.
Makes no sense.

Re: Fed Cup 2007 - R1 vs Spain

Do you guys think that they let Vesnina replace Sharapova just for Anna? since Anna rarely plays doubles, and if she has to play with a russian, then it'll be Vesnina.. and this way, they can gain points for the Olympics next year, cause Anna's very likely to be on the Olympics team.

I think Anna should start ahead of Nadia. Doubles isn't her strength right now.

Good luck Anna!

News story - in Russian.

Maybe I'm translating wrong but I don't understand Tarpishchev's reason for not including Safina.

Can someone translate this because I'd be very interested in why Dinara wasn't included.

It only says that Safina is currently in the USA and is playing Amelia Island (where she lost to Petrova yesterday, by the way). I don't quite understand how that's supposed to make her unavailable for Fed Cup. It also says Zvonareva is not healthy and has some kind of viral infection. I don't understand the logic of choosing Vesnina over Safina, unless of course Safina declined the invitation. The rest of the article is mostly about Sharapova's withdrawal due to injury.

Re: Fed Cup 2007 - R1 vs Spain

but they still have Kirilenko, Poutchkova, Likhovtseva... maybe more, i can't remember... I think all of them are better than Vesnina at this point, and Likhovtseva is kind of a double specialist.. that's why I think they wanted Vesnina to play just to pair up with Anna in the double's match.. they have enough great single's players already.
