The New York Times

----------------------------------------------------

Summary:

Defaults and retirementsplayed a big role at theChampionships this year from the start. Lili de Alvarez, the 3 time finalist, and British star Phoebe Watson both withdraw from singles before the tournament commences. Both hope to play mixed doubles and enter the draws-both default. Watson is having throat issues and Lili swollen tendons.

All of this makes Helen Wills-Moody an even firmer favorite to win. Helen Wills-Moody brooks no opposition, rolling over the field in devastating fashion. Her sternest foe is the French Simone Mathieu, who manges 5 games in 6-3 6-2 in a semifinal defeat.

It was the other semifinal that produced fireworks. Tiny Cilly Aussem has bloomed this year under the coaching of Bill Tilden. After losing the first set she blitzed Ryan 6 games to nil. The winning of the middle chapter tired her however, and things were tied at 4 all when a shock ending occurred.

Serving at 0-30, Cilly slipped and fell on the turf after an exhausting rally. 0-40. Limping to the baseline, Aussem tossed the ball up to serve and collapsed in a dead faint. The German is carried off court on a stretcher. This incident also took her out of the mixed doubles, where she was the #1 seed with Bill Tilden.

Elizabeth Ryan came on court for the final flashing a big smile. Old "Chop and Drop" has been playing here since 1912. She hauls off doubles trophies every year, yet can't grab the singles trophy. Today is no exception. Helen Wills-Moody has too much power for Ryan to employ her tactical game.

'Her only effective weapon was a tantalizing drop shot which hopped over the net and then fell almost dead while Mrs Moody had to rusg from the baseline in order to retrieve it. These were shots, however, tht even Borotra or Allison couldn't have saved, and at match point Mrs Moody-with a sense of humor nobody expected of her-quietly gave Miss Ryan a dose of her own medicine by sending over a brilliant drop shot herself.'

'..So Mrs Moody is still Queen of Wimbledon-a queen more commanding, majestic than ever.

Wills and Elizabeth Ryan won the doubles as expected, but British fans had a fresh face to cheer in Sarah Palfrey and partner Edith Cross. "Little" Sarah combines a pretty face and shapely form with exciting volleys at net. Wearing a flame colored bandeau, on one rapid volley exchange Sarah hit Elizabeth Ryan in the face with the ball. In the second set the steady Edith Cross evened the score up at 5 apiece. 'The crowd went wild' wrotethe New York Times. The young upstarts were poised to tie matters at 8 all with the crowd cheering them on all the way. The last game went to deuce, but errors by Sarah ended things.

Ryan had a grand Wimbledon. In winning the mixed with Jack Crawford she took two out of three titles. Only the singles eluded her. She was a bit lucky to reach the final, having been down 6-5 and a couple points from defeat vs The Swiss Miss Lolette Payot in round four.

The British had their worst ever Wimbledon. Ermyntrude Harvey fainted near the umpire chair at 2-4 in the third vs Mrs McIlquham in a match of long rallies. Just before dropping Harvey declared, "I cannot go on." She had to default in all three events.
