Had few minor setbacks (searched for an ATM to withdraw yen and took the wrong train out of Yokohama), but all worked out great
I brought a spiral notebook yesterday to help take notes too
Got to the Coliseum around noon and saw Henman playing an exo with some kids. Wasn't too thrilled especially once I realized I was missing the Shaughnessy/Osterloh match (0_o) So I got up and ran over there real quick. I walked by the Dushevina/? match and saw her routinely cleaning her opponent's clock
On to Megz and Lil. I joined the match at 2-6 1-2 Shaughnessy. Megz was trying to move her around with her short inside-out forehands and it worked as she got to *3-2. Lil mixed up the serves to keep up and get to 4-3* Megz was able to get to *5-3 though by better constructing points and benefitting from a few Lilian UFE. Lil was slapping her thighs to whole time to get motivated. On set point, Megz hit a piercing forehand crosscourt and Lil couldn't get a reach on it. SET SHAUGHNESSY 2-6 6-3! Lilian talked trash the whole way back to her chair
In the first game of the final set, Lil really worked the Megz backhand to get the early break. In the next game, Megz shot to 0-40* Lil then hit an awesome inside-out backhand winner, but Megz broke back. 1-1. The next game was looking good for Megz, she started with an ace and worked her way to net for a nice overhead to get to *30-0. She then tossed in 2 DFs to even it out at 30 all. The next point Megz hit a clean backhand winner (which I didn't see often) and shouted, "YAHHHH!!!!" It was kinda funny because she sounded just like Anna Williams on Tekken 2 when she grabs the opponent's head and flips over them
Lil threw in her one winner in the form of an inside-out forehand to get to DEUCE. A couple points went back and forth and the match was still at DEUCE. Finally Megz whacked a service winner and Lil yelled, "CAN YOU TAKE ANY LONGER?!?!"
That's when I noticed that Megz was taking a couple extra seconds between points....Pierce-style
Shaughnessy finally held to get to *2-1
During the next game, Lil hit a line ball while down *0-30 and disputed the call. The umpire wasn't havin' it though. On the next points Lil came in and hit a sweet stretch volley followed by a forehand xcrt winner to get to 30 all. She kept up the momentum and nailed a swinging forehand volley from midcourt to get to *40-30. On the next point, I was lined up to take a pic of Megz returning serving and she slipped and fell; the racquet went flying
She was down for a good 30 seconds and Lil came to net to see if Megz was okay. I was really
because it looked really painful. In one of my pics, you can see part of Megz laid out from that spill
Megz, got up and walked it off. 2 games all.
Next game, Osterloh broke with an overhead smash to get to *3-2. After that changeover Lil hopped up energetic from her chair and carried that energy into the game to hold at *4-2. During the next game Megz walked to her chair to get a another racquet and Lil was a little pissed. When she got back, Lil whacked Megz serve for a return winner (apparently Megz's stroll to the bench didn't phase her
) The next few games Megz tried to exploit the angles, but Lilian showed some REAL GRIT out there and got to *5-3. Miss Lilian was very impressive to in closing out the match strong.....STRONG!
The celebration was short though, her coach took her right to the practice court after the match and was drilling her running forehand DTL
Schruff/Chan came to the court after the Shaughnessy/Osterloh match and I moved over to the adjacent court to see Schuettler put the finishing touchings on his opponents. It was good to see Rainier finally put this dude away because he was grunting real loud and talking trash during the Megz/Lilian match
On matchpoint, the dude came to net and Rainier nailed a running forehand winner xcrt and the dude just stood there in disbelief
After that I walked around the grounds for a bit and took a peek at a doubles match where Grandin and some other girl was giving a lesson to two Japanese girls. I must say, Grandin was definitely looking "grand" out there; and I mean that in a robust sense
I didn't want to take a picture of her, but I took one.......
She looked like she was having fun out there though. And her volleys were pretty solid! The Japanese players were hitting right at Grandin and she was thumping volleys without moving. It reminded me of a ball bouncing off a brick house. I saw Paola and Vivi practising. Vivi's serve was looking like straight garbage, but the net skills were on point. They are both so cute when they talk Spanish. Can't really describe it...it just sounds cute
On one of the back courts Ai drew her usual swarm of Japanese fans and I got an autograph as Kostanic went to join her
This was the dialogue:
Me: "Jelena? Miss Kostanic!"
Me: "Can I have your autograph?"
Very robotic and cold. I'm guessing that she was either in the zone, not good with English, or cold. I wished her good luck and hurried along
In the Coliseum, I caught the end of the Ginepri/Porto match and it's then that I realized that I'd stop cheering for players. For real! I cheered for Shaughnessy and Ginepri and both players got bounced out the tournament
So for the rest of the day I was
Ginepri just couldn't get into a rhythm. After that match, I ate some chicken on a stick and Jarkko Nieminen walked past me
I wanted to halt him dead in his tracks, but didn't feel comfortable talking with chicken grease all over my face
I can see the headlines now "Excited fan blows chicken chunks all over tennis player"
After cleaning up, I saw Paola and Vivi walk by
I called Paola's name and she stopped and looked back so cute. I wanted to take a pic with me between Paola and Vivi, but Vivi kept walking. Paola shouted, "VI!!!" And this tramp looked back with a smirk and walked even faster
So I took a quick snapshot with me and Paola and it's horribly off center because I held the camera myself
I must say though, I'm glad I'm not particularly a Vivi fan; otherwise I probably would've a really pissed. Maybe she has so few fans that she doesn't know how to treat them?
Moving on, I found Jamea practising a court way off in the back and she saw me coming and turned and gave me the cutest smile. It's like she was thinking, "I knew you'd come back." Kinda weird, but I can't quite put it into words. So I parked it on the concrete and watched her practice for damned near an hour. She was working really hard on the running forehand xcrt and the running looped forehand DTL. She was having such a good time and keep looking back and me during the practice
I had to go though to catch the Bartoli/Craybas match. When I got there, I found it totally uneventful. Jill was going for too much on her shots and Marion just got everything back and profitted dividends on the Craybas UFEs. By this time though, I was over my phobia of cheering for players and even let out a few, "ALLEZ MARION"s
It was funny because then, some Japanese fan said the same thing
Also, Marion's fitness may be a concern (notice the second pic I took of her). The key event from this match was that I noticed Marion has a rather peculiar service motion. It is a quite a sight. I don't know whether to like it or dislike it. I reminded me of Rebecca Sealfon's habit if spelling words and covering her mouth between words. I not even going to BEGIN to put her service motion into words so i took a video clip of it. For what it's worth though, her service is not a problem because she was definitely whacking them in!!!
