The New York Times

------------------------------------------------------

Summary:

A record 6 of 8 foreign quarterfinalists and the first semis without a British female.

Akhurst of Australia is solid as a rock. The New York Times reporter joked that, "Miss Akhurst should spell her name Miss Accurate, for she seldom makes a mistake." (July 3, p 14)

Alvarez played the match of her life in routing the steady Daphne Akhurst in a 6-3 6-0 semifinal. She made only 7 errors the whole match, 3 on double faults. Wills pounded Ryan into submission 6-1 6-1 in the other semi, serving up 4 aces.

Wills was a tad off form in the final. Nonetheless she easily took the first set 6-2. At that stage the worm turned, and when the Senorita led 3-0 in the 2nd set a stir went through the gallery. The streak took all of Lili's reserves however. Several days illness due to a cold earlier in the week left the Spaniard without much reserve energy. Wills swept the next six games and the match in a contest watched by King George and Queen Mary. Queen Helen only lost 18 games in 6 matches.

Despite the score fans were enthralled with the backhand half volleys of Alvarez, often taken on the rise right after the ball bounced. Hundreds waited outside Centre Court in the vain hopes of getting a seat inside. The queue for standing room tickets started to form at midnight, with young lads paid to keep places in the line.

So clear was Wills victory that other topics raised interest in the aftermath of her dominance. There was speculation of rematch with Suzanne Lenglen for charity. Wills was open to the idea pending USTA approval. Another rumor suggested she would be traveling to Australia to compete.
