Romina Oprandi!

The Italian girl stormed past Zvonareva and will meet Kuznetsova in QF!

But I haven't seen her any match, even didn't hear about her before this tournament, who can tell me something about the cute girl? Thanks.

GOOD LUCK TO

She is a real talent, I saw her @ Antalya - 25.000$ and she won the tournament.

Not only power, also has variety in her game, and really solid. Especially crazy dropshots.

But she has to be quicker and faster, and she can be a real prospect fot WTA..

As far as I can work out, Romina Oprandi is now on an impressive fifteen-match winning streak, but despite her stunning results against Sam Stosur and Vera Zvonareva it would take a brave person to bet on her defeating Svetlana in her recent form.... I would be impressed enough if she took Svetlana to one tie-break, let alone a three-set match, or a victory.

Here is Romina's winning streak, starting in Torrent c. April 25. Granted, the first two tournaments were at $25,000 level, but even those can be very tough to win outright out of thirty-two main draw entrants, and she didn't drop a set at either, and then came through a tough qualifying draw into Rome too. By my calculations, her performance at Rome already (after beating Vera Zvonareva) is almost sure to carry her inside the Top 100 in the WTA rankings.

1. Beatriz Garcia-Vidagany 6-2 6-0
2. Silvia Soler-Espinosa 6-2 6-2
3. Paula Garcia 6-1 6-0
4. Sara Errani 6-2 6-3
5. Ekaterina Makarova 6-1 6-3 - Romina wins Torrent

6. Oksana Karyshkova 6-2 6-1
7. Lina Stanciute 6-0 6-4
8. Evgeniya Rodin 6-1 6-1
9. Tina Schiechtl 6-4 6-1
10. Petra Cetkovska 6-3 7-5 - Romina wins Antalya-Manavgat

11. Mariana Diaz-Oliva 2-6 6-2 6-2
12. Sun Tiantian 6-4 7-5 - Romina qualifies for Rome

13. Kristina Brandi 6-0 5-7 6-3
14. Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-2
15. Vera Zvonareva 6-0 6-1

Well, she certainly has surpassed most expectations in taking a set from Svetlana.... 4-6, 7-5 and the decider still to play for. Can she go even further? Does she have nerves of steel and no choking instinct against a Top-10 player?

Shame about the result (4-6, 7-5, 6-7), but she achieved both reaching a tie-break and winning a set, and only won one point fewer than Svetlana in the overall match (115 points to 116). Just shows what she is capable, and I suspect that, as applied to Li Na in September 2004, this Italian's near-victory over Svetlana will herald her breaking into the Top 50 within six months afterwards. As things stand, she will only be just inside the Top 100 after this week, but surely she'll be right up there at least with Camerin and Santangelo soon, and who's to say she won't leapfrog them to join Pennetta and Schiavone?
