^It's funny how USO2011 could have turned out when you think Coco was her 2R opponent. If Coco's deathwish for Sam had started only a couple of years earlier … :scared::lol:

* post reserved for schedule, results, etc. *

(Hope I get around to this:unsure:)

Great title!

:) :worship:
Thanks:)

I wasn't sure if anybody would get the reference. I think Sam would be great as a modern-day Jimmy Stewart:D

Re: Ms Stosur goes to Washington (after wiping the Bad Gastein dirt off her feet)

It's good to start a new thread with Sam's victory and winning of the Bad Gastein Title today! Her 8th WTA singles title, and 2nd clay court title!! Really proud of Sammy. I suspected from the beginning that this could be tough because Knapp showed already on Friday that playing two singles in one day, just makes her a better, stronger player in the second match. She came out striking the lines, and although Sam is the better player, at that point in the match, there was a gap between their consistency, because of fact that Knapp already had her eye in, and Sam didn't.

Knapp is also no easy player after Sam's relatively easy run in the bottom half, with a favourable draw for a change! So it can be understood that Sam started panicking thinking she should play to Knapp's level, and started taking way too many risks, trying to hit the lines like Knapp was. She should have just played herself in, although, when she hit any kind of tame shot, Knapp did seem to punish it. But as Sam played herself in, she started playing better and better, and more relaxed, sensible, powerful, aggressive but not over-ambitious tennis. She was really focussed towards the end, even when she made a few wrong decisions, she kept fighting. It was beautiful, and I would love to see this match again! There was some real quality tennis in here - powerful stuff, and precision aggressive tennis in between!

I'm posting this here, because we all finished cheering and Sam won the title, so I thought it a great victory article:

Stosur Wins Dramatic Bad Gastein Final

Sam Stosur battled back from the brink of defeat to beat marathon woman Karin Knapp and win her second WTA title of the year at the NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies.

Published July 26, 2015 12:15

BAD GASTEIN, Austria - Sam Stosur battled back from the brink of defeat to beat marathon woman Karin Knapp and win her second WTA title of the year at the NÜRNBERGER Gastein Ladies.

The day began in winning fashion for the No.3-seeded Knapp, who battled for more than two and a half hours to make it past No.1 seed Sara Errani a rain-postponed semifinal match, 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-5.

And it looked like her momentum from that victory was carrying over into the final - Knapp jumped out to a 6-3, 4-2 lead with three points for 6-3, 5-2, and she even served for the match at 6-4, 5-4.

But the No.2-seeded Stosur wouldn't go down without a fight, rallying to win the second set in a tie-break and then cruising through the third set to win in two hours and 28 minutes, 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2.

"It was a very hard match today," Stosur said. "I was getting completely outplayed in that first set, and even though she was up in the second set too, I started to feel like I was doing a little better. Obviously she served for the match but I hung in there, got that set then played better and better from there.

"It's not ideal to be playing a semifinal and final in one day, a two-and-a-half-hour match in the morning then another two and a half hours in the afternoon, but unfortunately that's just what happens with the weather sometimes. And she did serve for the match, so she wasn't doing too badly either."

"It wasn't easy to play five hours today but I was really fighting. I just missed some chances, and she used hers," Knapp said. "It was a great week, though. I'm looking forward to the next tournaments."

It was Stosur's eighth WTA title after winning Osaka in 2009, Charleston in 2010, the US Open in 2011, Carlsbad and Osaka in 2013, Osaka in 2014 and now Strasbourg and Bad Gastein in 2015.

Will Stosur come back to defend her title next year?

"I'd love to come back," she commented. "I've said all week, it's a beautiful place and I've really enjoyed being here. I love being in the mountains - it's something quite different for us from Australia.

"And it's my last week in Europe for a long time - it's been a good place to finish the trip."

By the way Stro, the curse of the 3 setters did pretty much continue on centre court

Re: Ms Stosur goes to Washington (after wiping the Bad Gastein dirt off her feet)

I have no idea how these things work Zamboni, but as long as we don't lose what is no on this thread Stro started and as long as he can do his titles when he wants to? Stro? Luminous? I guess having volume numbers makes it easier for fans to know there are more threads to find when searching, but wait for the specialists who know more thane me lol.

If I merge the threads, stromatolite can't change the title of this one anymore.
You would not lose what's in this thread.

Alternative is to close/delete the one I just started. It's no problem. (if anyone posts there between now and deletion, I can easily move the posts here as well)

I think that would be preferable if it's not too much trouble. Luminous wanted to take a break from things after hosting all Sam's results threads for the last couple of years, which was why I opened this one this time. So far nobody has posted on the other thread, so if you close it there will be no confusion. Thanks!:)

Btw, A big thanks to Luminous for your hosting of these threads for the last couple of years:yeah:

You did a great job with your creative thread titles and the info about Sam's points and scheduling.:)

Thx Strom.

Lol those pics she took after winning is sooo Australian of her. Thats why I like the chilled Aussies.

Now peeps can stop sayin sam vultured because she worked hard to win in Strasbourg too.

I say her game is still a work in progress but its getting there. She had no coach this week.

Funny how quite a few of Sam's best results in the last three years have been while coachless :worship:

Re: Ms Stosur goes to Washington (after wiping the Bad Gastein dirt off her feet)

In the past couple of months, Sam has doubled the number of countries she has WTA singles titles in (Japan+US+France+Austria) :inlove:

She's gone from having 0% red clay titles, to 25% red clay titles, and 16% clay titles to 37.5% clay titles :worship:

She now holds more singles titles than all other Australian players combined (Sam has 3, I *think* everyone else only has 1, with Bernie defending his Bogota slam). She still has zero chance of winning the Newcombe Medal :oh:

:lol::lol::lol:
Sam won!?
:worship::worship::worship::worship::worship:
I don't want to know how ugly it was. In my mind 2010-Sam showed up.
10+ titles is definitely on the cards now. Who'd have thought that at the end of 2012.
I'm happy with 8 though. It's an impressive tally, and I'm glad she has a couple in Europe now too. Now 1 Australian Open please...
Hopefully this win re-assures her that she can get out of bad situations.

Re: Ms Stosur goes to Washington (after wiping the Bad Gastein dirt off her feet)

Goo Sam! I think she should be aiming for a top 15 finish this year. And then a big push to get back into the top ten next year.

I miss Sam being a top contendor on tour :(
I really think those days are gone. I'm fine with the way she is, it's all good. She's still playing some decent ball, and I just like having her around.

Re: Ms Stosur goes to Washington (after wiping the Bad Gastein dirt off her feet)

If you look at the players from the lower half of the top 10 down, I think it's far from obvious that Sam doesn't have what it takes to get back into the top 10. She is 17-7 since reuniting with Dave Taylor, I doubt that many of the players currently above her have done better than that in the same period.

It remains to be seen to what extent she can reproduce that in big tournaments against higher ranked players, but even in her peak years she wasn't winning multiple big tournaments every year. It really only takes a couple of deep runs in big tourneys, supplemented by a handful of okay results in smallish tournaments. If Sam didn't believe she was capable of that I don't think she would still be playing.

I was going to say that i was betraying my age, but actually this one is even a bit before my time. I'm an incurable film buff I'm afraid:oh:

Re: Ms Stosur goes to Washington (after wiping the Bad Gastein dirt off her feet)

Well Sam now has won a title in two places with word 'bad' in it.. Carlsbad and Bad Gastein! I'm guessing both originated from the word 'bathe'. I'm sure Sam deserves to bathe in glory of her 8th title this week. I'm not having any expectations for Washington though, as it is always tough to keep up two good tourneys in a row.. Or for that matter to get two decent draws in a row! If Sammy gets a good draw again, I may change my mind! Enjoy bathing in your victory Sammy! You really deserve it!!

Bathe in Carlsbad and Bad Gastein; Wash in Washington.

Give her the title already
