This is true, and the result came down to the last 5 games, in which Sam's game fell apart more dramatically than I've ever seen. Zheng didn't need to fight too much tbh, she really just had to keep the ball in play and wait for the error from Sam.

Very happy that Sam and Jools (is it Goersur or Stoerges?) won. I hope they go deep together, I think that would be a really good tonic for Sam. Reaching the 2011 Wimbledon final with Sabine was a perfect way for Sam to get over the disppointment of her singles loss to Czink, and we all know what she did a few months later

Sam is playing mixed with Luke Saville as well. Clearly no boozey junk eating night anytime soon. You have got to praise her for her guts and determination to stick around in Melbourne after yesterday. I so hope she can kick some ass the rest of the year and dissipate some of those choking double faulting demons. Nothing says STFU better than a few titles.

Stosicki was a lot easier I thought, and cooler as well. Storges sounds like a fish, and Goersur sounds like ... erm ...

I think Stoerges is easy to say, and sounds more like an actual word. It's probably better

Although Goersur has the benefit of rhyming.

Samlia or Julmantha aren't so great either

Tbh, I don't care too much what they're called as long as they keep winning, or failing that, have fun losing. They actually have a pretty good draw I think, so a deep run is definitely a possibility. You go girls!

Luke and Sam weren't so lucky, and it's hard to see them getting past Bob Bryan and Sania Mirza in R1. Still, really nice that Sam is playing with Luke, it must be quite a thrill for him. Hope they have fun as well.

I think these quotes from DT from an article posted by stromatolite in the other thread go to your point:

Quote:
''It was terrible to see,'' he said. ''At 5-2, I put my phone in my pocket so I wouldn't forget it because I knew it was the last game. It is an absolutely devastating loss. It's illogical for a player of that level - but that's what it is. It's not that easy to solve there's no easy answer.

'There's not one thing or suggestion that I've ever read that she hasn't tried. People make statements as if it's something new. She's tried everything. Sports psychologists, you name it. She's one of the best players in the world so she's got access to a lot of information and these people are making comments like it's new.

''A lot of people who aren't in sport, I don't think they really understand. She's obviously very anxious and it's highlighted under pressure. It happens to people in everyday life. Her anxiety happens in sport.''

I've been wondering what's the deal with Sam and Lisicki. They had so much success in doubles and suddenly they stopped playing together. I hope they didn't end things in bad terms?

I am just going to be a tab creative and call them "GOATSUR" - it just sounds really badass and coincidentally, AT are my initials

Btw I have uploaded several clips from the doubles match today in the videos thread if you haven't watched/want to watch again.

No, I'm pretty sure they're still on friendly terms. I believe it was Sam who ended the partnership because she wanted to take a break from doubles and concentrate on singles for a while, and when she decided to play again I guess Sabine already had another partner. But Sam and Julia seem to get along well as well, and are a pretty good team as well, so it's fine I think. As long as I see Sam laughing and happy on court I'm happy too

Re: ...HardCourt II

Watched Sam and Luke today. They were both pretty awful really

I had the feeling they both knew they had no chance so they were just having a bit of fun. There were a few good points, but most of the time they were just swinging and hoping the ball would land in the right spot. The good thing is that Sam looked completely relaxed, and that she at least held serve at 1-5 down in the second to force Sania to serve it out.

Hopefully she'll be a bit more focused tomorrow. I really think Stoerges could go deep, but not playing the way Sam did tonight.

Re: ...HardCourt II

Well, tough match up first round. Sam and Luke haven't played before AFAIK, and Bryan/Mirza are specialist doubles players, so I guess the scoreline isn't too bad.

Agree that Goerges and Sam could have a good run. If they get their serves going and it stays sunny and warm, I doubt a lot of the specialist doubles players will know how to manage either of their serves

Re: ...HardCourt II

^I'm watching the warm up now (the death spasms of Eurosport Player, at least as far as tennis is concerned).

Don't know much about Lepchenko/Zheng, as a doubles pairing at least. You would think Stoerges should be favorites here, shouldn't they?
