Matches Sam SHOULD have won!!

Just thought I would list matches Sam should have won since 2005 please tell me if I made any mistakes
2005 Gold Coast Final lost to Schnyder 6-1 3-6 5-7. Lead 5-3 third set?
2005 Sydney Final lost to Alicia Molik 7-6(5) 4-6 5-7. Was within 2points at 5-4? in the third set hit the ball straight to Alicia had the whole court open!Would have had match point
2005 Moscow lost to Safina 6-4 6-7(5) 4-6 lead 6-4 4-0 40-0 second set and 3-0 in final set
2007 Berlin Open lost to Chakvetadze 6-3 6-7(1) 6-7(5) had match points didnt she?
2008 Wimbledon lost to Vaidisova 2-6 6-0 4-6 had a break in the third set??
2009 Sydney lost to S.Williams 3-6 7-6(4) 5-7 I think everyone knows about this
2009 Dubai lost to Zheng 6-3 5-7 5-7 lead 4-2 point to go up 5-2 in final set
2009 Indain Wells lost to Radwanska 6-3 3-6 5-7 had break in second set

Matches she won that noone thought she would or cam back from nowhere
2007 Rome beat Amelie Mauresmo 7-5 6-7(4) 7-6(7) Amelie had match points

Like Alicia said Sam needs to learn about Controlled agression. Wish Alicia would coach her!

Re: Matches Sam SHOULD have won!!

LOL
Some random matches there.
Take out Hingis, Davenport, '07 GC Safina.
Put in '09 Sydney lt S. Williams (after holding 4 match points), '09 Dubai lt. Zheng (after leadig 4-2 fs with points for 5-2) and '09 Indian Wells lt. Radwanska, supposedly out of form and down on confidence.

Re: Matches Sam SHOULD have won!!

I actually think her game is more of an issue than her head.
There is no margin for error. The db hander is flat, the forehand so wristy and relies on perfect timing and she doesn't get enough first serves overall. So when it gets tight her game just has to go off just a little and she's in trouble.
A bit more margin for error and even if she gets tight and her game drops off a little she shouldn't throw matches away with so many errors.
But didn't see the Zheng or Radwanksa battles - so unsure how she lost them.
Either way Im not devastated - she's in these matches - hopefully they will fall her way.

There's more to life than just being happy.

Good post.

And I agree with your last sentence, at least she's placed herself in contention in those matches (where she isn't expected to win) - which is better than losing in two easy sets imo.

It's not fun to see Sam lose leads I must admit (and it would of been nice to see her get those wins), but hey at least she's giving it a good old shot.

She'd have to be the biggest choker on the tour?

Re: Matches Sam SHOULD have won!!

^^^Nah there is worst but to think if she would have won that match against Serena probably would have won Sydney and then would have faced Serena in AO semi and would have been full of confidence!!!!

Re: Matches Sam SHOULD have won!!

LMAO

As if she would have won Sydney...
She would probably have made the quarter finals and then lost to Wozniacki. Serena was playing better against her, and Wozniacki pushed her just as much.
And why do you automatically assume that she would have beaten both Dementieva AND Safina (two players she has never beaten before) to win Sydney, THEN go on to make the semi finals at the Australian Open? I think you have too higher expectations of her. She is not in that league.

If Sam is ever going to when a singles title (note, IF) she will win it at an event like Hobart/Seoul. She won't ever win a tournament like Sydney, she was incredibly lucky to make the final in '05 and didn't make the most of her chances.

And she is a bit of a mental case IMO. When she puts herself in a winning position against a top player, she starts thinking too much, rushing too much. That is (I think) when she starts to make mistakes, and use poor shot selection. And she has a dysmal record against the likes of Vaidisova, Dementieva (0-3), Safarova (0-3), Safina (0-3), Petrova (0-3) etc. To me this suggests that she has a poor mentality, not a killer at heart. She has had opportunities to win sets and matches against these players, but blown them with her thinking.

I agree with that but I still think it's much more to do with the head, as zac said above, she always tends to rush when things gets closes, too quick between points, easy sign of she's struggling mentally. That volley against Serena was a shot she would make every time, she wa sthinking she already won and complted duffed the volley. She's so beat mentally right now, it's not pretty.

We'll see how she does in miami.
