May 14, 2008 SAM Stosur's strong fightback after an injury-enforced lay-off from the tennis tour has been rewarded with a wildcard entry into this month's French Open.
Tennis Australia's Craig Tiley described the decision to give Stosur one of the two French Open wildcards granted to Australians in a reciprocal deal as "one of the easiest wildcard choices we've had to make".
The men's wildcard went to unheralded fellow Queenslander Robert Smeets, a 22-year-old lefthander who will make his Roland Garros debut after quietly working his way up with some good results on the secondary Challenger Tour.
The well credentialled Stosur missed the start of the season through illness, only returning in April, and has seen her career high ranking of 27 early last year slide out to No.145.
Stosur, who made the third round of the French Open last year, has made a semi-final and quarter-final in two ITF events in the US since her return from illness.
She was due to play Venus Williams in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome tonight, having beaten 42-ranked Michaella Krajicek 6-3 6-2 in the first round.
"Sam has fought her way back with typical determination. She has been working extremely hard to prepare for her comeback and has already beaten two top-100 players on her return," said Tiley.
"Sam is a former world No.1 doubles player and top thirty singles player who, with some matches under her belt, will quickly ascend the rankings."
Dutch-born lefthander Smeets has reached four quarter-finals on the Challenger Tour this year and is ranked No.161 in the world.
