QUEENSLANDER Sam Stosur will test her recovering right shoulder at a Challenger tournament before she makes a planned WTA Tour return in May.
Stosur consulted a specialist in Melbourne this week, who decided she did not need surgery on an injured shoulder that has further delayed her intended comeback this month from a virus.
Stosur's coach David Taylor said the Rome event starting on May 12 was now pencilled in for her intended WTA comeback.
"The good news is the doctors think surgery isn't necessary; the bad news is they thought it would have progressed further," Taylor said.
"So she is still practising for her return. If she can serve 50 serves without pain - she's doing 20 - she'll start back in the third week of April.
"She only gets eight tournaments in 12 months with her protected ranking, so she has to choose them wisely."
