Re: Amelia Island Thread!
NOTEBOOK: Tennis, not siblings, focus for opponents
By BART HUBBUCH, The Times-Union
One of Tuesday's early matchups on the Stadium Court at Amelia Island wouldn't have sounded out of place on the men's tour just a few years ago.
Dinara Safina, the fifth seed in the Bausch & Lomb Championships, is a younger sister of former Australian Open champion and current ATP Tour standout Marat Safin.
Her opponent, unseeded Michaella Krajicek, is a younger sister of retired Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek.
If Safina's reaction after her 6-4, 7-5 victory is any indication, it could have been labeled a showdown between two women tired of being asked about their more famous siblings.
"I don't think about it anymore," Safina said about the connection with her brother. "Maybe when I was a little bit younger, it was more difficult for me. But I'm used to it."
The two hear the questions a lot now because they are facing each other more.
Tuesday's match was their fourth since last June, with Safina winning each of the past three.
Safina sounded ready for the topic to switch from successful brothers to tennis. "I have my own life now, paying for my own things, and I'm sure it's the same thing for [Michaella Krajicek]," Safina said.
The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
