Way too early for Simone Alipieva. The cut in the Q is top-400 WTA. Even top-400 ITF would be a challenge for her. She will have her time for sure but this does not make much sense. She should focus on the Junior Championships in Hørsholm (where she had to struggle today).

And who is Frederikke Svarre? She lost 0 and 3 to Emilie Francati at the Danish Junior Championships this week. Apparently nobody at the WTA tournament have any clue about the level of the Danish players. I have not seen other WTA's where players at such a low level have been awarded WC's. It is a bit disappointing and also embarrassing from a Danish point of view.

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

I agree. Danish wildcards should be given to Barbat, Grage, Ejdesgaard, and Melsted - in that order (if I had anything to say). And in mixed order I would probably prefer Francati, Noe, Ditlev and Rønholt (and possibly Rasmussen, Stripp) before Alipieva.

I'm sure the tournament management has awarded Alipieva and Svarre for their performances at the Wozniacki Academy. They've both been training there, and Frederikke Svarre also got a q-wc last year. Svarre is ranked #32 in DK, Melsted is #5! I think it's sending some wrong messages about the level of tennis in DK.

I still wish Frederikke and Simone the best of luck! Go girls!

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

They may have given Laura Robson a wild card, even she may have been moved IN MD... My guess Barbat or Melsted get a wc also... Even you never know when given 2 not from DK wild card... even understandble they given Lesia Tchurenko (sp?) a wildcard...

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Danish Junior Championships 2012, indoors

U14 - SF
(1) Simone Alipieva def. (3) Ida Emilie Krause 6-2 6-1
(2) Emilie Håkansson def. Sofia Munch 6-2 6-1

U12 - SF
(3) Olga Helmi def. (9) Milica Kostic 6-2 6-2
(2) Helena Francati def. (4) Alisha Ali Hussain 6-0 6-2

Helena Francati has been very solid losing only 6 games in 4 matches. She could be interesting to follow the next couple of years.

Simone has a very tough schedule today: a singles SF at the junior championships early in the morning, then a doubles SF at 13 CET, and finally the WTA match tonight! Certainly not an ideal schedule. GL!

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what is Alipieva's origin? She has the same surname as a Bulgarian sports commentator.

Simone's parents are Bulgarian. She has had all her tennis training in Denmark, as far as I know. However, she only got a Danish citizenship a few years ago.

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Did Cecilie prefer to win the U18, instead playing the Farum Qualies? (Eller måske have de ikke flere wildcards?)

I don't think she was offered a wild card. DTF (Danish Tennis Federation) changed the schedule of the junior championships so the U16 and U18 players didn't have to play saturday. There's no reason why she shouldn't play at WTA if she was offered a wild card.

Danish Junior Championships 2012, indoors, doubles

U12
(2) Amanda Rommetveit Rohde/Olga Helmi def. (3) Alisha Ali Hussain/Amalie Højgaard Nielsen 7-6(5) 6-3

U14
(1) Emilie Håkansson/Simone Alipieva def. (2) Helena Steenberg/Ida Emilie Krause 6-1 6-2

U16
(1) Emma Rønholt/Emilie Francati def. (2) Julie Noe/Ulrikke Høyer 3-6 6-2 (10-8)

U18
(2) Malene Stripp/Frederikke Støchkel def. (1) Cecilie Melsted/Sofia Helgstrand 6-4 3-6 (10-6)

Simone Alipieva and Emilie Francati won two titles each at the championships (singles and doubles). Simone has had a great week playing WTA and everything, but Emilie Francati's performance has also been spectacular - especially since this is her first year as a U16 player (she's still 14 years of age)!

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Tanks

A bit about upcoming schedule: Some of the youngest juniors will play a Tennis Europe U12 in Turkey next week. Draws and results can be followed here (I probably won't update from this tournament).

The older juniors are not playing much internationally at the moment. We probably have to wait until the KB tournament 30/04/2012 to 06/05/2012. It's a Tennis Europe U14 and U16. Simone Alipieva could play U14 but has entered the U16 (more points to win, although she needs a singles final or doubles title to gain ranking points!). She's seeded #1.

U16 players like Martine Ditlev, Emilie Francati, Julie Noe, and Emma Rønholt will probably focus on the two Danish Grand Prix senior tournaments in Odense and KB (early May).

A brief video with Simone Alipieva playing some doubles and talking about why she enjoys playing doubles:

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

The KB tournament Copenhagen TE Outdoor (U14 and U16) is about to begin (qualies begins this weekend, main draw begins Monday).

Each of the two events (U14 and U16) have 64 players in the main draw, and approximately 16 of these will be Danish girls. Draws will be available here

The draws are quite weak - especially the U16 draw without the top 4 Danish U16 players Francati, Rønholt, Ditlev, and Noe. Simone Alipieva is seeded #1 in the U16 draw and has a good chance of going very far. Ulrikke Høyer is perhaps a surprise entry. She hasn't played any Tennis Europe matches in a couple of years, but KB is her club, so maybe her appearance isn't such a surprise after all.

I'm not sure what to expect from the Danish U14 girls. One or two should be able to go quite far. There are also some very young girls (U12) in the draw, but I'm sure it'll be a good experience. GL!
