Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Danish Junior Championships (outdoors) were held at Hellerup this past week. Here are the results from the singles finals:

Girls under 12:
(1) Simone Michael Alipieva def. (3) Emilie Vesten Håkansson 6-0 6-0

Girls under 14:
(1) Martine Ditlev def. (2) Ulrikke Høyer 3-6 6-2 6-0

Girls under 16:
(1) Cecilie Lundgaard Melsted def. (3) Emilie Elsvad 6-2 3-6 6-3

Girls under 18:
(1) Mai Grage def. Caroline Kønigsfeld 6-1 6-0

No big surprises as all the #1 seeds won. It's a bit worrying, though, that Mai Grage is the only really good player her age at the moment (besides Karen Barbat, who has moved on to the pro circuit). Mai Grage won her SF 6-0 6-0 - giving away just one game in SF and Final! But there are some talented players under 16 (and under 14 and 12).

There are many photos from the events at the championship's official facebook-site

The talented Simone Alipieva - just 11 years of age:

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Mai Grage is in the $220,000 Slovenia Open (Portoroz) this week. This is Mai Grage's first ever WTA tournament! In fact she has only once before played in an ITF tournament - in the 2008 Danish Open! She got a Q-wildcard for Slovenia Open.

Mai's Q-draw:
(4)Olga Savchuk v (wc)Mai Kristin Grage
Anastasiya Vasylyeva v Tadeja Majeric
Eleni Daniilidou v Severine Beltrame
Keren Shlomo v (6)Elena Bovina

Mai's match is the second on court 2 today (Saturday), and since play begins at 10 AM her match will be played at noon (approx).

Danish tv2.dk has talked to Mai Grage:
Quote:
- I am so excited and really looking forward to this. It will be a great experience. I'm relaxed now, but I'am sure I will be nervous when the match is approaching.

- I just need to be relaxed and play my game. There is no pressure on me, and I hope this will give me a boost.
Good luck

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

Sadly Mai will most likely get torn apart by Savchuk. Hopefully she will be able to prove me wrong, and show a bit of her potential

Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread

From tv2.dk:

Quote:
Grage won in a Slovenian heating oven

For the first time ever the 18-year-old tennis talent played at a WTA tournament Saturday. It was in Slovenia, and her opponent was Olga Savchuk (WTA 152). When the Dane had won the first set 6-3 the Ukrainian had to retire because of the heat.

- It's huge for me. This proves to me that I can compete this level and it gives me extra motivation to proceed, said Mai Grage to tv2.dk.

Second round of qualifying will take place Sunday.

Unbearable heat
The match was played in a heat approaching 40 degrees [104 F], which had great importance for the outcome of the match.

- There were doctors on the court who measured our pulses. And then she could not handle the heat. I was difficult for me too, but I made sure to get plenty of salt and water before the match, and it helped me, said Grage to tv2.dk.

In the second round Sunday Grage plays against either Slovenian Tadeja Majeric or Ukrainian Anastasiya Vasyleva.

Perfect timing
Even if her opponent retired Grage still got a good sense of the game in the first set which she won 6-3 in just over half an hour.

- I was nervous in the first game when I was broken but then I played perfectly. I put her under pressure, got her out to run, and I made it hard for her, says Grage to tv2.dk.

Grage got a qualifying wildcard to the tournament, just as she has for the WTA tournament in Farum in 14 days.

That is really impressive I hope she can deliver another good performance in Q2 tomorrow.

We'll know in a couple of hours. I'm quite excited!

This is Mai's last season as a Junior - she can only play (as a Junior) until the end of 2010, so she'll need her own thread soon anyway. I might create a thread when I get the time if noone else does. US Open? I don't know. She has played AO, FO, and Wimbledon 2010, and I'm sure she'd like to play US Open as well. Unfortunately she has dropped in the junior rankings lately (#70 combined atm), so she may need to qualify? But I'm only guessing.

Btw, there are three photos of Mai Grage from yesterday's match at the official Slovenia Open site.

Match stats from Mai's QR1-match yesterday:
