Re: The Danes are coming - Danish juniors thread
Grage won in a Slovenian heating oven
For the first time ever the 18-year-old tennis talent played at a WTA tournament Saturday. It was in Slovenia, and her opponent was Olga Savchuk (WTA 152). When the Dane had won the first set 6-3 the Ukrainian had to retire because of the heat.
- It's huge for me. This proves to me that I can compete this level and it gives me extra motivation to proceed, said Mai Grage to tv2.dk.
Second round of qualifying will take place Sunday.
The match was played in a heat approaching 40 degrees [104 F], which had great importance for the outcome of the match.
- There were doctors on the court who measured our pulses. And then she could not handle the heat. I was difficult for me too, but I made sure to get plenty of salt and water before the match, and it helped me, said Grage to tv2.dk.
In the second round Sunday Grage plays against either Slovenian Tadeja Majeric or Ukrainian Anastasiya Vasyleva.
Even if her opponent retired Grage still got a good sense of the game in the first set which she won 6-3 in just over half an hour.
- I was nervous in the first game when I was broken but then I played perfectly. I put her under pressure, got her out to run, and I made it hard for her, says Grage to tv2.dk.
Grage got a qualifying wildcard to the tournament, just as she has for the WTA tournament in Farum in 14 days.
