Nicole's 2006 In Review

Nicole started off the year by making the semis in Sydney and reaching her 2nd 4R at a GS in Melbourne. After making the quarters of Tokyo she took a break due to injury and came back for the green clay tournaments.

After suffering early losses Nicole take another break due to injury again I think. Then after defeating Golovin 11-9 in the third for Fed Cup, she lost 2R in Rome to Hingis after putting up a brave fight. In Strasbourg Nicole won her 6th WTA Tour title beating Peng in the final.

Nicole's big breakthrough came at Roland Garros where she took out the #1 player in the world, Amelie Mauresmo to reach her first GS QF. Nicole then took out the reigning Wimbledon champion, Venus Williams in the QF to reach her first ever GS SF. After leading 7-5 5-*3 and then serving for the match at 7-5 5*-4, Nicole let Kuznetsova come back and her cinderella run was over.

Nicole fought her way to the 4R of Wimbledon, making that her 4th consecutive 4R or better at a slam. Nicole lost to Na Li who was in very good form in three tough sets. Nicole then started her summer hardcourt campaign with a SF in Stanford and then another SF in San Diego. Nicole withdrew form Montreal in order to make sure her shoulder was ok for the US Open.

At the US Open Nicole made another 3R at a GS, but this time she didn't make it to the 4R as she fell to eventual semifinalist, Jelena Jankovic, in three sets.

Nicole lost her first match in Beijing to Ai Sugiyama in another three-setter. But Moscow proved to be much better as she came back from 1-6 2-5 down, saving 3 match points, to score her 2nd win over the then #1, Amelie Mauresmo. In the semis Nicole put up a good fight, saving 6 MP's before falling to Nadia Petrova.

In Zurich Nicole was upset by Tatiana Golovin 6-2 6-0, which most did not see coming. After losing early in Zurich, Nicole regrouped and made the QF of Linz where she met Jelena Jankovic, the one who knocked her out 3R @ the USO. Nicole was able to get revenge and then met Nadia Petrova in another semfinal. Nicole lost this one quite easily and that was it for her 2006 season.

Nicole finished the year in the top ten for the first time with a 39-16 W/L and one title.

So, how would you rate Nicole's season on a scale of 1-10?

I think that this year was an amzaing year for Nicole.....she finished in the top ten and she reached the semis in a GS and that is great for a teenager.
We can only expect to see her at the very very top of the sport.

Re: Nicole's 2006 In Review

It was a good year for Nicole finishing inside the top 10, a great run at RG, and doing better @ AO and Wimbledon than she did in 2005, and won a title.

However, with the shoulder problems forcing her to miss IW/Miami, some bad losses, not making past SF in a lot of tournaments, and not having won a title higher than Tier III are some of things that that keep the year being great I think. So I'd say like a 6-7...

It will be interesting to see what/if any (which I'd hope there to be..) improvements Nicole makes to her game during the off season. For 2007, I'd like to see Nicole stay healthy, take a Tier I/II title, and have more wins over top 10 players...

I gave Nicole an 8 because she did reach the top 10 and made the RG semis.

However, I thought she'd have more wins over top 10 players.

I think its been a solid season for Nicole. It's her transition year after a great season last week and she made in into top 10. Sure, many of us would have loved to see her winning a Tier II/I title but she didn't get a cakewalk draw ala Safina/Ana I. Her worst loss to date was possibly to Castano @ FCC.

Next year would be interesting. Many of the youngsters are on the edge of breaking out of the shells.

To rate her year on a scale of 1 to 10, it depends what your basis for comparison is.
  • The average player on the WTA Tour?
  • Other players her age?
  • Great players from tennis-history when they were 17?
  • How well she did compared with other years in her career?
  • How well she did compared with expectations at the end of 2005?
It's a pretty special year that sees a 17-year-old reach a Grand Slam semi-final and convince me to induct her into my Eternal Fanship. But I felt that Nicole could have done more before Strasbourg, and since the French Open - I was amazed by her play there, and hence a little disappointed that she didn't add more titles or qualify for the Sony Ericsson Championships.

My Eternal Fanship: 1. Monica Seles; 2. Мария Шарапова (‘Maria Sharapova’); 3. Daniela Hantuchová; 4. Jelena Dokić; 5. Iva Majoli; 6. Karina Habšudová; 7. Вера Звонарёва (‘Vera Zvonarëva’); 8. Nicole Vaidišová; 9. Анна Чакветадзе (‘Anna Chakvetadze’); 10. Lucie Šafářová; 11. Ирода Туляганова (‘Iroda Tulyaganova’); 12. Magdaléna Rybáriková; 13. Sabine Lisicki
