UK TV-alert: Transworld Sport (Los Angeles 2007) / UK magazine-alert: Ace

1. UK TV-alert: Ana in Transworld Sport

(Transworld Sport may be televised in other countries, but the details in this message are specific to the UK.)

There are three points from the Los Angeles final between Ana Ivanović and Nadia Petrova in this week's Transworld Sport, which is repeated with sign-language at 04:05 BST on {Friday night/Saturday morning} on Channel 4.

The tennis was 18 minutes into Sunday's broadcast of Transworld Sport, so I recommend 04:22 as a safe start-time for timer-record, and 04:30 as a safe stop-time.

The points they showed:

* Ana serving 6-5 (ad Ana): She started the point with a short, weak serve, followed by a deep backhand moonball down the line, but when Petrova replied with a forehand down the line, Ana ran around her backhand beautifully to paint the sideline with an off-forehand winner (accompanied by a loud groan as she waited to see whether it would be in, followed by a fist-pump). While I generally disapprove of tennis-players hitting forehands when they should be hitting backhands, I must admit that nobody does that better than Ana.

Bruce Hammal: "Ivanović reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros this year, is looking for her second Tour-title of the season in the States."

* Ana serving 7-5 4-3 (30/30): Ana started the point with a deep, wide serve, and finished it on the seventh stroke as she pounced on Petrova's short backhand down the middle to hit a crosscourt forehand winner just inside the sideline - Petrova had no idea which way that one was going!

Bruce Hammal: "With a single break of serve in each set, 19-year-old Ivanović is rarely troubled by her more experienced opponent."

* Ana serving 7-5 5-4 (40/0): Ana sealed the title in style with an ace out wide, just inside the sideline. She raised her arms and gave a cute little squeal of delight.

Bruce Hammal: "The win sees her rise to a career-high fourth in the latest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour ranking."

Ana may not be a member of my Eternal Fanship (I call myself a demi-fan), but I must admit that she is a brilliant player, and hits some amazing shots on her forehand. I also think she's a great exponent of the spreading rally. Her grunts, while not very loud, are quite cute, like a little kitten trapped on an island in the middle of a lake.

The only reason I won't induct Ana into my Eternal Fanship is that I just don't feel the same passion for her as for the members of my Eternal Fanship, all of whom have satisfied both my Reason and my Passion.

2. UK magazine-alert: Ana in Ace

Ana is on the front cover of the September 2007 issue of _Ace_ tennis-magazine, and there's a big article about her (pp. 18-21).

Entitled "Sweetness And Fight", the thesis of the article is that Ana is a nice person as well as a talented tennis-player, and if she could win a couple of Grand Slam titles to go with her good looks, then she would rival Maria Sharapova for earning-power.

Ana says that it's possible to be a nice person off the court as well as a champion on it, but the article's ultimate conclusion is that nice girls finish last.

That swimming-pool at the Jedanaesti April sports-centre that Ana practised in as a little girl? Apparently it contains one-and-a-half tennis-courts, so presumably it's just the half-court that is too narrow for crosscourt shots.

In my opinion, Ana is good-looking but not gorgeous (like I said, I admire her for the quality of her tennis). Personally, I think the most beautiful girl in this issue of Ace is she who appears on the front cover of the inner magazine _British Tennis_: Naomi Broady.
