PYW - China Open

Welcome to Beijing! A week packed with PYW action. Portoroz and Kolkata also host WTA events; Jounieh and Albuquerque play host to two large ITF events. The biggest event held this week, however, is the China Open in Beijing. Here the absolute stars fight for the most points.
But don't forget to vote for these events as soon as you can!

Quarterfinals day and almost no top favourites left. Nor seeds for that matter. After only two rounds in this highly dotated Chinese tournament, the public had to say goodbye top favourites Tatiana Golovin, Australian Open winner Shinobu Asagoe and Asagoe's compatriot Ai Sugiyama.

But do not fear because Wimbledon champion Venus Williams and recent Bali victor Anna-Lena Groenefeld are still among us. The German hardhitter had it quite hot under her feet when she faced Sugiyama today. However, the blonde talent got through and can score another Eastern win over local favourite Shuai Peng.

While the oldest of the Williams sisters advanced in straight sets, younger sis Serena also did it in straight sets. Losing that is. Chinese wildcard Tiantian Sun scored one of the biggest wins of her PYW career and is now only three matches away from a second PYW title. Not bad for a woman just ranked inside the top 100.

Ofcourse, this tournament wouldn't be a real tournament if there wasn't a Russian player in this latter stage. However: Vera Douchevina isn't the one you'd expect to see here. Especially when you realise she had to play first seed Maria Sharapova in the previous round. Sharapova succumbed in the tiebreak and let Douchevina in the quarters and probably back in the top 50.

Besides Sun and Peng, China has another player to cheer for. Na Li took out the top favourite for this tournament, Tatiana Golovin. Also, Viktoriya Kutuzova is about to play (and win?) her sixth match in Bejing, after having had a succesfull run in the quallies. And last but not least: Polish beauty Marta Domachowska. The baseliner defeated sixth seed Jelena Jankovic to set up a duel with Venus Williams.

I know I've been a liar
And I know I've been a fool
I hope we didn't break it
But I'm glad we broke the rules
My cave is deep now
Yet your light is shining through
I cover my eyes
Still all I see is you
