If a player gets knocked out...

Do they get a second chance?

Only joking... I'm not stupid. :P But my question is; if they get knocked out, and they have no doubles matches to play, are they likely to stay in Melbourne for the two weeks or go home?

Alright, I think my effort at humour has been mis-understood. I know full well there are no second chances, but WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS:

If they get knocked out, and they have no doubles matches to play, are they likely to stay in Melbourne for the two weeks or go home?

I think it would be up to the individual player. Also their financial situation and whether they want to pay for two weeks accomodation or go home. Also would depend on where and when their next event is.

Most players leave town pretty quickly after they lose. For example, I was staying at the same accommodation as Emmanuelle Gagliardi at Wimbledon a couple of years ago and she was checking out the day after her loss.

I think they intentionally bring out the draw for the mixed relatively late for any first round losers that wishes to play.

Consistency is the key...

Virginie Razzano got a second chance after being knocked out by Jelena Dokić in the first round. Jelena hit a forehand winner on [Jelena's] match-point, but it was overruled and the match continued. Unfortunately cute Jelena lost.

It also depends if their buddies and in particular training partners stay in the tournament or not. And many players still have doubles to play after they lose in singles.
As previousely said, it depends on where and when is their next tournament. If they have a tournament the next week they will travel directly there, unless their home is near. If they don't play the next week they will usually fly home as soon as possible.
There's also a question of which surface they played in this tournament and which surface they play next, if it's a different surface they would like to get there as soon as possible and practice on that surface, but if it's the same it doesn't make a difference if they practice here or there.
