Birmingham 2006

Just thought I'd jump the gun and start the next tourney thread. Here's the most recent player list taken from the WTA World Birmingham thread. Maria is listed as the 5th seed, but shouldn't she be at least the 4 seed? She was ahead of Sugiyama this week. Getting a Top 4 seed would give her a better chance at reaching the semis.

NOTE: The pale green color is in response to Makiri's new outfit this week!

If Maria sharapova enters though wouldn't that push her back down to 5?

Grass is usually where Maria struggles the most. Hopefully she can do better this year.

Wow, Makiri is the fifth seeded player. I am sure this may give her a nice draw and maybe she can move to the semis. Good luck!

Yeah, but who does play well on grass? Every player will be adjusting from the slow clay to the grass, so if anything, everybody is at a disadvantage going into the grass season. I feel that Makiri should do well because she is a good volleyer. Does she dare serve and volley? Well, maybe if she had a more consistent serve she could. It would be a good sneak play for her.

Personally, I think Masha has the perfect game for grass. She takes the ball very early (also on the return), as you mention she is a very good natural volleyer, she likes to serve&volley. Her serve is improving , so this is a good sign... In two years time grass may even be her favorite surface IMO

I agree she does have a good game for grass. Still she hasn't had a lot of success on grass the past few years. Her volleying is a lot better and hopefully that will help her succeed on grass

"Withdrawals: Maria Kirilenko (RUS) knee"

Hmmm... If this is a real reason for withdrawing then I`m starting to be nervous about her future... Why on earth she is playing doubles in every event if the knee is still troubling her ? And for what was the mixed doubles in Paris, an exhibition event that no one cares about !?

I don't know... maybe her knee was okay for playing doubles & mixed in Paris. I don't think she played that when her knee wasn't okay.
Of course it's bad that she can't play in Birmingham but maybe she need a little more time to rest (because of her knee). Get well soon Masha!

By the way I care for mixed doubles
