French Open 2006

Just saw the seeds on a Eurosport article, Maria is Seeded #21. As they have her ahead of Dechy, they are indeed using this week's WTA rankings. Sharapova seeded #4, and good to see her still on the players list and in the seeding. Martina H at #13, obviously her best draw position since her return. Best I can see, no surprises. Lindsay withdrew a week ago and the rest seems to track the current rankings.

As best I can tell, it has been extremely quiet on the Maria news front since the doubles loss in Rome. None of the articles she has been in mentions it, I seem to be the only one posting on her Russian site the past 5-6 days and of course, her "Official Site" is no help. And she withdrew from the Strausbourg tournament where she was the number 2 seed without a mention anywhere as to why. Hopefully, Maria will advance far enough in the French Open to make it on ESPN and we will be able to watch her play and maybe get an idea on what's up with the left knee.

Assuming that Maria can get past her first two opponents at RG (hope I didn't just jinx her!), her potential 3rd-round opponent could be a 9-16 seed. I'm hoping she doesn't draw Hingis or Safina who have been hot recently. I'd like to see her go against Daniela or Myskina who have both been pretty shaky recently. At least there's no fear of facing the top seed like she did in Melbourne.

We'll see how the draw looks in a couple of days!

Maria lost in the first round of the French Open in 2005 and thus has no points to defend this year. A great opportunity for her to move up in the rankings should she win a few matches. Maria was not seeded at Roland Garros last year so her draw should shape up better this year.

For perspective, leading up to the French Open in 2005, Maria played the exact same three tournaments she played in 2006 - Warsaw, Berlin, Rome. In Rome 2005 she lost in the first round singles, just as she did this year. In Paris, she lost in the first round singles to qualifier Eva Birnerova, 62 57 36. She then went to Birmingham next and won in the first round, beating Yuliane Fedak 63 62. Then came what to me was a crushing defeat to Jamea Jackson in the second round in Birmingham by a straight sets score of 26 36. From the first round loss in Rome last year, Maria did not make it past the second round in ANY tournament straight through the US Open. Then she went to Asia for the fall season and started a huge winning steak along the way winning the China Open. So Maria is not going to have a lot of points to defend throughout the summer, a good time to increase her point total and better her ranking.

Myskina and Hantuchova are the less threatening of those, Maria should well win there if both reach the 3rd Round.

Well, when I look on Makiri's results during the past few weeks I am a bit afraid if she can play a solid tourney at RG. Most important is that she gets a nice draw wich offers her an opportunity to reach maybe the third round. This would be a nice result. I am sure that she will early meet one of the top players and I hope that this will give her the opportunity to play on Center Court in front of all the TV - Cam's.
Best of luck, Makiri!!

I was looking into that as well it does seem that if makiri is going to make her break and rise up the rankings it'll be over the summer as she has so little points to defend, and the futher up the rankings she goes the better the draws she'll get.

Am I the only one who feels that bad luck will fall upon Maria again and she'll probably draw Martina Hingis?
