Makiri's Ranking

We spend a lot of time (or at least I have) wondering if Maria K's ranking is going to move up or down or stay the same, so it's probably useful for all of us to have a thread started on this subject.

As of February 27, 2006, her ranking stands at #23.

The rankings around her are as follows:

20 (18) PENNETTA, FLAVIA ITA 868.00
21 (21) JANKOVIC, JELENA SCG 832.00
22 (22) GROENEFELD, ANNA-LENA GER 815.00
23 (23) KIRILENKO, MARIA RUS 788.75
24 (24) GOLOVIN, TATIANA FRA 758.00
25 (25) MEDINA GARRIGUES, ANABEL ESP 755.00

Has anyone tried to calculate the 788.75 points that the WTA Tour has posted? I've tried it and I think I know all the rules about the Grand Slams + NASDAQ 100 counting + the Top 17 counting, but I can only come up with a total of 783.5 for Maria. What am I missing? I have the S'Hertogenbosch result as her 17th best result.

Ranking Preview - Doha

Last year, she played the Dubai event where she gained 4 points after losing in the second round of the quallies. These points are less than her 17th-best event over the past 52 weeks which is S'Hertogenbosch. There, she got 16 points for a round of 16 result at a Tier III $170K event. Therefore, she can only gain points at Doha.

A win over #200 Ting Li will get her 25 points, replacing the 16 from S'Hertogenbosch.

A win over either #53 Zheng or #15 Kuznetsova will give her 49 points.

If she makes it to the quarterfinals, her point total will (should) be 821.75.

#20 Pennetta and #22 Groenefeld are the top two seeds at a Tier III in Mexico City. Should they do decently there, they should stay ahead of Maria. Although Pennetta won this event last year, those point were already removed since it was played a week prior to last year. This is why Pennetta went down from #18 to #20. Neither Pennetta nor Groenefeld have any points to defend going into Acapulco.

However, #21 Jankovic played in Dubai last year and made the finals. (NOTE: Doha and Dubai switched dates this year, so although Dubai has already been played this year, the points from last year's Dubai tournament still count now). She has 137 points to defend from that tournament. Even if she makes the semis at Doha, she'll lose points and just enough to fall behind Maria K.

Therefore, Maria should move up to #22 barring anything bizarre happenning, like someone beneath her doing really well this week. But Maria has some sizable distance between her and anyone ranked out of the Top 25, so there's no reason for concern here.

QUESTION: Am I spending too much time thinking about this?

Thanks, Dan!

Well, if she wins Doha, she'll be #1 for the day!

But, most likely with the extra 186 points, she'll be #17 ahead of Ivanovic, assuming all others stay put. That is, of course, if I'm figuring this system out correctly, which is still a big IF.

Sorry for late reply , didn`t have time last week for this...

I tried to calculate the 799.75 points from this week ranking and... I can`t but I`m not exactly sure how many points she earned last year in Miami, Wimbledon and US Open, so if you (or anyone else) know that, then maybe we will solve the mystery

Thanks for the reply TeaMashA but quality points are excluded from the ranking now. So it can`t be 42 and 46.

Yeah I know but how I said, the quality points don`t count now, and that 42 and 46 was including quality points.

Keraj, I also had 38 for both Wimbledon and US Open, but have 19 for Miami since it's a Tier I $3,000,000 tournament.

You're correct about the quality points. Though they are still posted on the WTA website, they were taken away at the start of the year. Otherwise, Maria would have well over 1,000 points right now.

Thanks for listing these, Keraj!

Talking WTA Rankings - as of 3/6/2006

Rankings have been posted in other places in Kirilenko's Orchestra, but I'd thought I'd keep the Top 32 here since the name of the thread seems to require it.

I'll try to post these on a weekly basis, so that one would always know where to find the WTA Tour rankings. Sure, you can always goto the official WTA Tour rankings here, but those don't have Maria highlighted in magenta, no?

The big movers were #17 Pennetta and #18 Groenfeld, and of course #32 Hingis, who in my opinion, is already Top 15 material. #26 Jankovic was the big loser this week after last year's semfinal appearance in Dubai got wiped out by a first-round loss this year in Doha.

Of course ! And that makes a perfect 799.75 points from her 17 best tournaments.

But then what about this rule:

"The ranking points earned by any player who competes in the Main Draw of a Grand Slam Tournament must count on a player’s ranking as one of her best 17 Tournament results."

So what about her 2 points from Roland Garros ?

Now I think, I`m spending too much time thinking about this
