Tokyo, Japan - Toray Pan Pacific Open 2006

Makiri's fourth tournament and fifth week of play in 2006 is the Tokyo, Japan - Toray Pan Pacific Open, starting on 30 January, ending on 5 February. It is the first of the 10 Tier I's to be played during the year (5 in North America, 4 in Europe and only this one in Asia) and is played on "carpet" indoors. Last year Big Masha defeated Lindsay Davenport in an exciting three set match, winning the third set 76 (tiebreaker 75). There is $1,340,000 of prize money. The main womens singles draw of 28 women will have 4 first round byes to derive the 32 spot, 5 round draw. There will be 16 teams in the doubles draw. As Gisela Dulko has not yet committed to this tournament it looks like Team Dulkolenko will have the week off.

Makiri travels to Tokyo from Melbourne and will be moving two hours west. She lost in the third round at the Australian Open to #1 in the world Lindsay Davenport, in an exciting three set match. Tokyo is 6 hours later in the day than her home in Moscow. Makiri's singles record thus far in 2006 is 5-3, her doubles record is 3-2. She is ranked #25 in the 16 January WTA Rankings with 766.50 points, and will move up to the #24 or even #23 ranking when the 30 Janauray list is made public. This will be the fifth week in a row Makiri has played, and her current plans are to take two weeks off after the Toray PPO. Her next tournament after this will be the Dubai, UAE which begins 20 February. Below is the url for the Toray PPO english site:

Thanks for the info!

Well in Australia we get the Semi Finals and Final televised on Fox Sports, so lets hope Maria progresses this far!

Thanx Walt! Makiri is the 12th seded player at a Tier I event...this is the first time in her career. Really good. This could possibly offer her a lucky draw for the first two rounds.

Then again more than half of the people traditionally withdraw from PPO. She might well get a top 8 seed.

Caroline Wozniacki

~~ just too lovely ~~

Sorana Cirstea

Maria Kirilenko ~ Dominika Cibulkova ~ Raluca Olaru ~ Viktoria Azarenka

You may be right Kirilenko#1fan. You can start at the top with possible withdrawals. Davenport has an ankle injury and Sharapova has been battling injuries. You never know who else may withdraw.

Reflecting the predictions of Kirilenko#1Fan and House, Friday's player's listing at the Toray PPO shows that #1 Davenport has withdrawn as has Roberta Vinci who was in the 20 slot. Added into the players list at the 20 position Sam Stosur from Australia and Jill Craybas from the USA at slot 21. Rather than repeat the list, I just edited post #2 to reflect these changes. Makiri now up to the #11 position. Since beating Makiri, Lindsay has had a rough time she injures her ankle, departs the Australian Open in the Quarters and today the newspaper noted that Kimmy will go back into the #1 Ranking in the 30 Jan release. Now she withdraws from the Toray PPO.

Its a Tier 1 so it was always going to be tough. Although from the way they have been playing in the last few weeks i would give Maria a big chance over Ana. Good luck Makiri

It`s not a bad draw, she avoided seeded player in the 1st round, then is Ivanovic... oh well could be worse

Looking at the Quali only Raymond and Santangelo are dangers, IMO.
