Sydney, Australia - 2006 Medibank International

Makiri's second tournament of 2006 is the Sydney, Australia - Medibank International, starting on 8 January. It is a Tier II played outdoors on hardcourt. In a battle of two Australians Alicia Molik beat Samantha Stosur for the title last year. 21 players have been named to the main draw so far, Makiri is in postion 16. Kim Clijsters likley to be the #1 seed followed by Amelie Mauresmo, Justine Henin-Hardenne and Patty Schnyder. Nadia Petrova, the #1 seed at Auckland will likely be the 5th seed at Sydney. Other notables are Nicole Vaidisova, Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova.

The reason for setting this thread up so early was to note that Dulko is also in the Sydney main draw, at position 17. So, hope springs eternal that Team Dulkolenko will make its first appearance of the year in Sydney.

Regarding Sydney the Women's first round starts on Sunday 8 Jan and will complete by Monday 9 Jan. Sydney has the women's finals on Friday night so players can get out of town to Melbourne for the Australian Open early. Given that it is already Friday in Sydney, Makiri does not have all that much down time until she is at it again.

In case you are wondering where Bepa Z is in the Sydney Main Draw list, well she isn't. 21 are in the MD already, there will be 4 qualifiers and 3 wildcards. With 28 players, there will be 4 first round byes. Bepa is on the "Next" list slotted at number 5. So if they draw the top 3 from that list as the WCs that will leave Bepa playing qualifiers..... while Makiri has a direct in already to the MD. Lesson - Makiri really needs to keep her ranking in the mid-20's, or of course go higher.

The Sydney qualifying is on 6 Jan and 7 Jan. It is clear that Vera will not be able to make this qualifying round because she is busy playing in 2 finals on 7 Jan. So her only way into the MediBank International would be as one of the three WCs. Would be strange if Vera wins Auckland but cannot even make the MD at the Sydney tournament the very next week. With Woman's singles play starting Sunday, and it already being Saturday morning in Sydney we should be seeing the draw soon. If Vera does get a WC, I will pray she is in the opposite half of the draw from Makiri.

Thankx for the infos. I am sure Makiri will get one of those Wildcards, I mean, she became very popular during the last tourney's with a lot of good results, and she will get some important points for her quaterfinal at Auckland.

Henry - Sorry for the confusion, Makiri is already in the main draw, in position 16. It is Verz Z who is not currently in the MD. I promise to stop writing so much about Vera.

Well Maria's run as the queen of bad draws continues in Sydney. She is in an absolute brutal section of the draw. She faces doubles partner Gisela Dulko in the 1st round, with a potential match up with Nadia Petrova in the 2nd round. Her quarter also contains Justine Henin-Hardenne, Martina Hingis & Vera Zvonareca. Ouch!!

OK guys i have huge news. I met Makiri today in Sydney i watched her practice and afterwards i had a photo and she gave me an autograph she was so beautifull and sweet i had a smile on my face from ear to ear. She was practicing with asagoe and was really hitting nicely and mixing things up well. She is really looking good.

i watched maria practice today, there were quite a lot of people there already. i guess she's becoming a really popular player now well i waited and waited until she finished, after 1 hour instead of ending her practice she continued. this time with anna-lena groenefeld. she was hitting pretty well but luckily she finished soon enough after that, when a lot of people (me included) queued for her autograph. out of the female players practicing today, she was the one with the most people asking for her autograph! i wish her luck in her australian campaign
