Maria Kirilenko of Russia Wins First WTA
Maria Kirilenko of Russia got the first WTA in Beijing Sunday to begin with, Anastasia Myskina added the 10th title in Kolkata to rally her spirits.
No one has tipped Maria Kirilenko as one of the favorites of the China Open – the arrangers managed to attract the real celebrities in tennis, including Sharapova, Davenport, sisters Williams. i.e. the defending number one and three former tops.
Thanks to beginners luck, perhaps, Kirilenko faced one of leaders only in the semi-finals. It was her compatriot Maria Sharapova of Russia, who, however, was unable to play to the end because of the chest pain. As a result, Maria Kirilenko sailed to the final to face Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld, who had never won in the WTA
tournaments as well. Despite the powerful service of the German, Kirilenko ousted Groenefeld 6-3 6-4 to win the China Open September 25, 2005.
Unlike Kirilenko, the victory of Anastasia Myskina
has sprung no surprise. Her route in Indian Kolkata, previously known as Calcutta, was far from strenuous. To add the tenth title in her career and the first in this season, the number one Myskina beat 6-2 6-2 Croatia's Karolina Sprem during the WTA Sunfeast Open final tennis match September 25, 2005.
