That is so good! I've never seen it before- thanks.

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

Re: The Gabriela Sabatini Thread!

Did the Gab every play with a wood racquet when she was younger? Since her game seems to have been heavily influenced by Vilas' style, I can't help but wonder if she had already started using graphite by the time she modeled her game after his. I can't imagine a 10-year-old Gaby trying to generate that kind of heavy topspin with wood.

Best left-right combination by a German (and that includes Max Schmeling): Steffi Graf. All she did in 1987 was knock Navratilova out of #1 and try to knock Evert out of the sport. (Mike Lupica in "The Best and Worst of Tennis in 1987", World Tennis)

"A couple of years ago, we nicknamed Steffi Graf's forehand 'Jaws'. And that music would go perfectly when she starts running in to the net, swarming on that little ball." (JoAnne Russell, during the 1988 Wimbledon final between Graf and Navratilova)

Re: The Gabriela Sabatini Thread!

I'm 99% sure Gaby started to play with a standard wood racket back in the 70s, she started when she was around 6 or 7, so 1976 or 1977, so she had to use a wood racket, a Donnay IIRC. There are some pics of her from that time, I'll try to post some later.

Gaby's first serve wasn't bad.

Not at all.

After all, in those days, there were things more horrendous than her serve ...

For example, Graf's nose, cries of Seles and Navratilova's glasses.

It was from 1992-1994. Drought. Remember? But serving problems aside, most players would kill for Sabatini's results during those lean years. Even through her slump, Sabatini had a lot of heart.
