ASV & Neale Fraser open Davis/Fed Cup exho at the Olympic Museum

I posted about this last week, so here's a follow up article on the new exhibition in Lausanne, Switzerland. I've taken it (well, the interesting bits) from the ITF Week newsletter.

"The International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge joined
ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti at the opening of an exhibition
dedicated to Davis Cup and Fed Cup at the Olympic Museum in
Lausanne last Tuesday evening. The exhibit features photographs,
videos and historic items of significance for both Davis Cup and Fed
Cup and uses the extensive racquet collection of the Olympic Museum
as a unifying theme.

Prior to the opening, the Museum staged a conference with the legendary Australian Davis Cup player and captain Neale Fraser and four-time Olympic medallist Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario who retired at the end of 2002 at the Fed Cup Final in Maspalomas. Sanchez-Vicario holds the record for the most Fed Cup matches ever played. The conference, hosted by journalist Chris Bowers, attracted nearly 200 local residents who took an active part in the discussion.

Both Sanchez-Vicario and Fraser affirmed the importance of representing your country in international competition. Sanchez-Vicario noted that, when she played Fed Cup or the Olympics, she always carried the Spanish flag in her heart. “I loved playing for Spain and I always made myself available when I was asked,” said Sanchez-Vicario. “Every player has a busy schedule but you can always find the time to play for your country.”

Fraser added, “Maybe because Australia is a little bit isolated, Australian players in every sport took enormous pride in representing their country. I can never remember a time that anyone turned me down when I asked them to play. In fact, there were always players who would say, ‘when are you going to choose me, Frase?”

“My greatest moments were playing Davis Cup,” said Fraser. Asked his secret for winning doubles, he noted that he had partnered Roy Emerson, Lew Hoad and Ashley Cooper. “Choose a good partner. I tried to play with Wimbledon champions.”
Fraser made the largely Swiss audience laugh when asked if he thought the Swiss Davis Cup team could go all the way this year. “Well, I hope it’s another nation,” said Fraser - the Aussie team could meet the Swiss in the semifinals if both are successful in next month’s quarterfinal
ties. “You have a great player in Roger Federer but you shouldn’t put too much pressure on him,” said Fraser.

Sanchez-Vicario, making her first visit to Lausanne and her first trip outside of Spain since her retirement, told the audience that she was enjoying her time off and that she would wait before making any decisions. “I’ve had a lot of offers but I want to take time before I decide.“ One possible position is Fed Cup captain for Spain and, while Sanchez- Vicario said she would enjoy the job, she would not
commit at this point to any future opportunities."
