Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Gwynifred Barrington Palmer
United Kingdom
Born November 24, 1897, in Ewell, Surrey
Died October 1987 in Aylesbury Vale, Buckinghamshire

Married Jens Jensen circa March 1918 in Watford

Gwynifred Palmer was a very promising player who took part in some lawn tennis tournaments in the years leading up to World War One. She appears not to have played tournament tennis under her married name.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Lucas, Emily Muriel
United Kingdom
Born 1878 in Saint Nicholas, Devon
Died January 19, 1962, in Dawlish, Devon

Married George Frederick King Adams circa September 1911 in Newton Abbott, Devon

Although she took part in some lawn tennis tournaments in the years circa 1904-12, Emily Muriel Lucas (popularly known as Muriel) is best remembered as a badminton player. She won many titles in the latter sport, including the women's singles title at the All England Badminton Championships in 1902.

Muriel Lucas also won the women's doubles title at the All England Badminton Championships no less than ten times in the years 1899-1910. Four of these titles were won with Ethel Thomson (later Larcombe), a future winner of the women's singles title at Wimbledon. After her marriage in 1911, Muriel (Lucas) Adams did not take part in any more singles tournaments.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Margaret Rivers Larminie
United Kingdom
Born 1886 in Jamaica, West Indies
Died March 31, 1964

Married Robert Clayton Tragett on May 22, 1911 in Saint George's Church, Hanover Square, London; later divorced

Like Muriel Lucas and a number of other early sportswomen, Margaret Larminie was proficient at more than one sport, in her case lawn tennis and badminton. She had by far her greatest successes at the latter sport, winning the women's singles title at the All England Badminton Championships in 1911 and 1912 and, for the third and last time, sixteen years later in 1928.

In those days badminton tournaments were usually held during the winter and, because lawn tennis tournaments were then mostly held during the spring and summer months, players who took part in both types of tournament would change their rackets accordingly.

Margaret Larminie was also a talented writer and had three popular novels published under her maiden name: "Search", "Echo" and "Deep Rivers". Her husband, Robert Tragett, remarried in 1934, so he and Margaret divorced at some point.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Note I need to add prior entires.

Mystery #1 Mrs L.S. Coe

1. IMO she is NOT Gertrude Ransom Hart for the following reasons:
  • There is no evidence GRH ever played tennis.
  • Louis Summer Coe lived in Connecticut, and not New Jersey, where Louis S. Coe was a prominent citizen in the town of Englewood.
  • Looking at Find a Grave, Louis Summer Coe's father was not Captain P Coe-the father of the tennis playing Louis S Coe of Englewood.
It should be noted that all the New York Times records and old books about Englwood New Jersey firmly place Louis S Coe in Englewood, New Jersey from the 1890s until at least 1910. Thus any person who is a candidate for the L.S. Coe in question needs ties with Englewood.

I still maintain that Ann (or Annie) Burdette, is the woman in question. She is listed by Bud Collins as Mrs L.S. Coe and was from the Englwood area.

I will recheck ancestry records to try and find more.
