Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

updated to post 294 (way behinf at this point-yikes!)

Jimbo-keep them coming-these are great additions. I notice you added Nasuelli on the other page-(Biographies). Add them all here please, as LKK cannot edit them unless he creates the post.

I followed up on Landes de Danoet-later Mme Kleinadel.

The French results gave "Yvonne", the English (such as Alan Little) "Simone".
Perhaps she was a Simone Yvonne or vice versa.

LKK-would it be worth it to check Polish sources as she married a Polish Davis Cup player?

I will try to catch up later this evening.

Unfortunately Polish sources never mention her first or maiden name (!) The Kleinadels visited Poland in April 1927, and stayed there for 3 weeks, they are described as "Mr Edward Kleinadel, our great tennis player, and... his young French wife", hehe. They were still not married in mid November '26, and got married before February '27, but I don't have any exact date. It's always hard to find any exceptional details on tennis in the Polish press before the WWII, the articles are never too deep. Her first name "Simone" appeared in some American newspaper that I found on the net - she was an opponent for Helen Jacobs in a mixed doubles match in Paris in 1935. But I don't know how reliable this source is...

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Rollo, I remember there was some thread in the Blast in which you listed achievements of those female players who had won more than 100 singles titles. It would be wonderful if you could find that old thread and add all those great lists to our bios of Smith, Mortimer, Evert, Haydon, Ryan etc. !

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

in Married names thread we had Couper as Soames husband's surname, but according the pic of their marriage it was Cooper. Therefore:

ELIZABETH "BETTY" SOAMES
United Kingdom
Married John Neil Campbell Cooper, 1 February 1936

It's a good idea. I'll see if I can dig it up.

And thanks for checking on our mystery lady Kleinadel. For now I'll keep her name as is.

Betty Soames Couper changed to Cooper, the more likely name. Having said that I do want to recheck the Wimbledon draws in case it was the newspaper that made the error.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

"Le Figaro" (November 28 November 1928) mentions the death of Edouard Kleinadel, a player of Polish origin, two days earlier, on 26 November. He had been unsuccessfully operated on for appendicitis.

The same report states that he had married Mlle des Landes de Danoet, the top French player (no first name given), in December 1926.
--

Also, "Le Figaro" of 7 June 1938 states that Sylvia Henrotin beat a Mme S. Kleinadel 6-2, 6-2 in the last 16 of that year's French Championships...

Very good Mark!

So with all we have I am leaning towards listing her as a Simone. I can note
that the French site lists her as an Yvonne, but now we have a French source (Le Figero), English (Little and Barrett) and American (the NYT) listing her as Simone.

Here's how it looks now:
