Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

It seems that Tonolli's last year is not 1951, but 1954 - she participated in the Italian Open Championships that year.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

It's need check but I am enough sure that Pflügner was the maiden name and von Ende the married name.

MARIA PFLÜGNER [Active 1930s.]

Married von Ende, circa 1931

Any thoughts on this Mark? Jimbo?

If not perhaps I should add LKK's note above to bio bios.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Added 4 bios: Rodocanachi, Gersi, Anthonie Kusenberg, and Guthrie.

More on Guthrie here (thanks for getting me started on her Jimbo!) It's a sad story. The socialite died in a fire on her houseboat.

Biographies of Female Tennis Players

note to slef-need to add PFLÜGNE

Guthrie won the Allegheny County Championship in 1914 (and 1916, when she won Western Pennsylvania Championships too), so I think that 1940 Census wrong to fix her DOB in circa 1901.

Here is an article that mentions some Mrs FB Snowdon (Martha Guthrie, the tennis player?) and her daughter Miss Martha Guthrie Snowdon (M.G. Snowdon). Was the former still alive in 1954 or "Mrs Felix Brunot Snowdon" from the text below is the 2nd wife of her ex-husband ? So is she just a step-mother for Martha Guthrie's daughter ? By the way: according to this article her 2nd husband's name was Edward (not Edwin) Hingst...

No-this is not Martha Guthrie-who died in a fire (see the other article in the bio).

Exactly-a stepmother.

The article you have linked too specifies the late Mr Snowden AND the late Mrs Hingst (this is Martha).

It's Edwin for certes-he and Martha are listed in the 1940 census and Ancestry has other records linking his name. Maybe Edward was a nickname?

I'll check newspaper archives later to see if I can get more on her.

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

Added Ende-Pflugner, but not convinced she was married to a Von-Ende. Lowe's lists her as a Fraulein Ende-Plugner in 1934.

Biographies of Female Tennis Players

but now I see Mark has a Frau von Ende in 1934.
And I see her full name in 1931 as Maria Von Ende-Pflugne.

The card photo is from a set of actresses. Was she also an actress?

In Germany there was the custom to portray sportswomen in cigarette cards. I post some of them: Aussem, Horn, Rost

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

I have found the dates of Martha Guthrie:

Born 1893 or 1894
Died 17 August 1941 (when she was 47) in Sewickley, PA

Married (1) Felix Brunot Snowden (1888-), between March and September 1917, divorced 1937
Married (2) Edwin S. Hingst, 1937 a month after the divorce

She had met Hingst when he was a taxi driver, and conveyed her to her home from the railroad station. (read on page 1 and 6)

Re: Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players

I think Maria von Ende-Pflügner might have had a double-barrelled surname without necessarily having been married, at least for a number of years.

I suspect that might be the case too Mark.

Should she be listed under "V" (as in von Ende-Pflügner) or simply "E" (for Ende-Pflügner?
