Welcome to the Blast Encyclopedia of Female Tennis Players. While this is very much a work in progress, we intend to create an A to Z Encyclopedia of women who have played competitive tennis.

Finding players:

Players are listed from A to Z alphabetically by last name. Thus Daphne Akhurst will be listed alphabetically under "Akhurst".

Daphne also played under her married name of Cozens. Cozens will be redirected to look under "Akhurst".

Example of the entry for Akhurst:

AKHURST, Daphne Jessie (Australia) [22 April 1903-9 Jan 1933] [Mrs. Royston Stuckey Cozens, from 26 Feb 1930] [Active 1919-31]

Last Name, First and Middle names. (Country) [Date of Birth-Date of Death] [other identities] [Years active]

Finding more biographical details, links, and pictures:

Notice the underlined name here: AKHURST, Daphne Jessie. Clicking on the name will work as a hyperlink, and will take you to a fuller biography.

Please enjoy using this as we grow, and don't hesitate to contact us with corrections, suggestions, pictures, or new entries.

n the first quarter of 1912, a marriage was registered in Paddington, London, between a Reginald C. Wilkinson and a Florence A. Bell.

However, the player mentioned in post 3952 above is "Mrs E.F. Wilkinson".

Hi Mark-you are correct. We are speaking of two different Mrs Wilkinson's

http://www.tennisforum.com/72937434-post299.html

Mrs RC Wilkinson (nee Nelson)=Florence Annie Nelson (born c 1880)

She married Reginald Court Wilkinson on 16 January 1912 in Paddington. His will of October 1958 does not mention his wife.

Her date of birth comes from the 1911 census. The place of birth was Timberley, Cheshire (also in Middlesex?) She is listed as living with the family of her future husband.

We are still in search of Mrs E.F. Wilkinson.

Update

Clift, Vera Kezia
Australia
Born in 1884 in Maitland, New South Wales
Died in 1975 in Killara, New South Wales

Married Basil Belgrave Capper in 1912

Active circa 1898-1905. Vera Clift is probably the Miss Clift who won the doubles title with Phoebe Howitt at the Victorian Championships in 1898, although Vera would only have been fourteen years old or so at the time. The same two players also won the doubles at the New South Wales Championships in 1899, when Vera reached the All-Comers' Final of the singles event before losing to Rose Payten. Vera Clift and Phoebe Howitt also retained the doubles at the Victorian Championships in 1899 and at the New South Wales Championships in 1900, the year in which Vera also reached the All-Comers' Final of the singles event at the Queensland Championships.

Vera Clift also took part in the Queensland Championships in 1903, when her first name was mentioned in the following report in 'The Brisbane Courier': http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/19224574?searchTerm=Miss%20Vera%20Clift%20AND%20%22tennis%22&searchLimits=exactPhrase=tennis|||anyWords|||notWords|||requestHandler|||dateFrom=1900-01-01|||dateTo=1903-12-31|||l-advtitle=16|||l-advcategory=Article|||sortby=dateAsc
--

Vera Clift was the eighth and last child of George Clift and Kezia Jane Clift (née Butler). Vera's family is listed here: https://www.geni.com/people/Vera-Capper/6000000017624109775

Vera Clift must have married Basil Capper in the last months of 1912 because she was still single when her father, George, died in June of that year and when the details of his Will were published three months later, in September. The wedding was probably a quiet affair out of respect for Mr Clift.
