ABBES, LYNNE (nee Lynn Marie Abbes)
United States
Born 21 June 1949 in California.
Married Michael “Mike” G Rolley 23 December 1967 in Conta Costa, California.
Daughter Ashlie
Active in the 1960s, retiring upon marriage in 1968.

An aggressive player known for her powerful serve, Abbes retired young in 1968 before the pro tennis era, gaining more renown as a coach.

Daughter of Ernest Abbes. President of the Northern California Tennis Association. Her name is Lynne (with an e) and NOT Lynn.Yet her birth notice (and many early sources) use Lynn. Did she add the “e” at some point?

In August 1970 she was named to coach the all-male tennis team at St. Mary's College in Moraga, California. This was the first time a woman was named to coach a men’s NCAA team. She was also hired as coach of the Oakland Aces, a World Team Tennis franchise owned by the Oakland A’s. Eventually she was served as Director of Women’s Tennis for the USTA for sixteen years. Among others, Lynne has coached Lindsey Davenport, Chanda Rubin and Jennifer Capriati. A high point in Lynne’s career came when she was seated in Lindsey’s box when she won the US Open.

AKHURST, DAPHNE (Daphne Jessie Akhurst)
Australia (NSW)
Born 22 April 1903 at Ashfield, Sydney
Died 09 January 1933
Married Royston Stuckey Cozens, 26 February 1930 in Sydney
Nickname: The "Shy lady of Wimbledon" (by the British press).
[Active 1924-1933]

The first Australian woman to reach the quarter-finals (1925), then the semi-finals (1928) of an overseas Grand Slam tournament in her only two overseas tours. Rated as #3 in the world for 1928, this was the highest ranking earned by an Australian woman until Margaret Smith (Court) in the 1960s.

She retired from singles play after her win in the 1930 Australian singles title, but won eight of the nine doubles tournaments she entered over the next two years, including the 1931 Australian Championship.

On 26 February 1930 at St Philip's Church of England, Sydney, Daphne Akhurst married Royston Stuckey Cozens, a tobacco manufacturer, and retired from serious competition soon after winning the Australian ladies' doubles championship in 1931.

After giving birth to a son in 1931, she won her final doubles championship in January 1933, playing with her dear friend Louie Bickerton. Within a week, Akhurst would be dead; the result of an ectopic pregnancy. She died under anesthesia during an operation. She was cremated after a service at St Anne's, Strathfield.

Her 5 Australian Championships in singles stood as a record until eclipsed by Nancye Bolton in 1951. As of 2020 she stands at #4 on the list of most Aussie singles won.

GRAND SLAM RECORD:
Wimbledon: SF 1928, QF 1924
French: QF 1928

CHAMPIONSHIP WINS:
Australian 1925, 1926, 1928, 1929, 1930
NSW 1929
VIC 1924
City of Sydney 1926 1927 1929
Cumberland 1924 1925 1926 1928
Metropolitan 1924
Liege 1928
German Champs 1928

"A strong runner and hitter, she was all over the court and could hit anywhere – and she knew the value of taking the net, where her volleying was adequate. In short, her opponents could not keep the ball away from her, and to top off her game, she had an excellent match temperament". (Thanks to GeeTee for this quote).

To honour her contributions to Australian tennis the women's singles trophy was named the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup in her honour. Her 2013 inductions into the tennis Hall of Fame was overdue.

ALBERT, JANE “Janie” (Jane Tyrell Albert)
United States
Born 02 June 1946 in Los Angeles, California

Married (1) Bradford M. Freeman, 16 September 1967 in Pebble Beach, Caliornia, divorced, June 1969
Marriedd (2) Ronald J. Willens, 20 June 1970 in Los Angeles, California
[Active: 1962-1967]

Her daughter Heather Willens,a tennis player, was born 11 October 1971.

1965 U.S. and Wimbledon quarterfinalist. Part of the winning 1966 Wightman Cup team.

Daughter of famed quarterback Frankie Albert, Jane Albert Willens inherited her father's championship spirit, capturing her first national title at age 14. Two years later she claimed the California State triple crown, the youngest titleholder ever. Albert continued her winning ways at Stanford University, her father's alma mater, becoming the national collegiate singles champion in 1964 and doubles champion in 1967.

Described as 'thriving on pressure,' Albert debuted at Wimbledon in 1963 on Centre Court, nearly taking the match against 1962 finalist Vera Sukova. Despite a back injury in 1964 she broke into the USTA Top 10 and was ranked No. 4 the following year.

In her Wimbledon run of 1965 she had to defeat Norma Baylon, Helga Schultze and Frankie Durr, all of whom were top tenners or close to it at the time.

She never played a full-time schedule and retired in 1967 after graduating from Stanford and marriage. Albert made a fitting exit from competitive tennis that year by winning two gold metals at the Pan American Games. Now a clinical social worker and the mother of three children, Albert was the first woman inducted into the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.

ALEXANDRE, Mme Josee (nee Josee ????)
Belgium

Ranked #10 in Belgium in 1950

Could she possibly =the Madame Marie Josée ALEXANDRE who lived in Saint-Hubert (Belgium) on 13 September 2005 at the age of 91? This would place her birth at circa 1916, so it is possible but unproven at this point, and still doesn't give us her maiden name.

ALLERDICE, “LOUIE” (nee Louise E Allerdice)

Louie lost in the first round of the 1887 US Nationals. After that we have yet to find her name in tournaments.

Ellen Hansell Allerdice calls her “the red haired sister of my husband”. Ellen lists her address as 7819 Roanoke Street, Chesnut Hill, Philadelphia. Passport application provides secure dates.

Bradford Knight was the brother of Laura Knight, RU in the 1887 US Nationals.

Re: Bio Test for LKK

SMITH, ETHEL (nee Ethel Sargeant Clark)
United States
Born February 1885 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Died in 1975
Married Hoxie Harrison Smith on 11 May 1914
[Active 1913-1924]

Most often listed as Mrs H Harrison Smith.

Played the US Nationals in 1913 as Miss Clark and 1914-15 as Mrs Smith. She modestly describes her 1913 US entry thus: "They needed someone to fill the empty places in the draw, and club players were the logical choice." Mrs Harrison Smith considered a victory over Molla Mallory and Eleanora Sears at Longwood in a 1916 doubles to be her best claim to fame as player, praising her partner Ann Shutleff.

She entered the US Nationals in 1933 at the age of 48.

Ethel was much better known in later years as someone who promoted tennis in Philadelphia. The Harrison Smiths were “Mainline” Philadelphians, and foundations exist in both Eleanor and Hoxie’s names. The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Tennis Center at Penn State-Brandywine, completed in 1992, contains eight courts, two of which are lighted for night-time play. It was funded by a major grant from the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Trust.

She was a prominent member of Philadelphia society and her love of tennis led to her establishing the United States Lawn Tennis Association Girls’ Sportsmanship Trophy and the Middle States Lawn Tennis Association Tournament. The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund, formed in 1977 from her estate (managed by Wachovia Bank, N.A.), benefits organizations located in Southeastern Pennsylvania, with primary emphasis on serving community needs in Delaware County.

Re: Bio Test for LKK

AMAURY, SIMONE (Simone Peignet-Amaury)
France
Born ????
Alive in 1975
Married (1) M.A. Gorodnitchenko (or Goronitchenko-both versions are in newspapers) in June 1931.
Married (2) Jean Felix De Letraz (1897-1954) on 29 August 1945.
[Active: 1925-1939]

1936 French quarterfinalist.

Entered the French championships from 1927 to 1937.

From 1932 she played the French as as Mme Gorodnitchenko, or in some sources Goronitchenko. Gorodnitchenko is the version that appears in Lawn Tennis and Badminton. As I trust this source the most we are going with Gorodnitchenko. M. A. Gorodnitchenko was the son of Michel Gorodnitchenko, a Commandant in the Russian Imperial Navy.

Her best result at Roland Garros was getting to the quarterfinals in 1936. Unheralded, she took out the 2 time champion Peggy Scriven in the 2nd round 0-6 6-4 8-6. Scriven was the #3 seed. In the quarterfnals Marie-Luise Horn of Germany romped to a 6-1 6-2 win over Simone.

It was a superlative event for Mme Gorodnitchenko, for she also made the quarters of the mixed doubles with Pierre Pellizza. They upset Kay Stammers and Bunny Austin. Simone made good use of her forehand and lobs in the match.

She wed French playright Jean Felix de Lepaz in 1945. It is unclear if she was widowed or divorced. After Jean's death in 1954 she carried on his legacy in the theatre until 1965.

A 1975 copywright is a strong indication she was still alive at that point.

She is buried in Monmartre Cemetery.

Re: Bio Test for LKK

ALSTON, "TINY" (nee Ruth M. Gaddum)
Ceylon/Great Britain
Born circa 1895
Died ???? [after 1934]
Married George Douglas Hamilton Alston (29.5.1891-29.10.1973 in Dikoya, Sri Lanka) on 21 March 1916 in Holy Trinity Church, Kandy, Ceylon [Active 1918-1934]

7 time winner of the Ceylon National singles titles.

From The Ceylon Observer, 23 March 1916:

Wedding at Kandy – Alston-Gaddum

Kandy, March 21. The wedding of Mr George Douglas Hamilton Alston, Sogama, with Ruth M., daughter of Mr George P. Gaddum of Gampola, was solemnised at noon today at Holy Trinity Church. Reverend A.M. Walmsley officiated. The bridegroom was attended by Mr A.C. Grant of Sogama and the bride given away by her father. She looked pretty in a dress of white, and carried a lovely bouquet.

The register was attested by Messrs Gaddum and Grant. A largely-attended reception was held later at the Hotel Suisse, which was artistically decorated with upcountry flowers and flags. Those present were: Mr Reginald P. Gaddum, Mr and Mrs S.J. Rammell, Mrs Macgregor, Mrs Huyshe Eliot, Mrs Haverson and Mrs and Mrs Charlton Jones.

The newly-married couple left in the afternoon for Trincomalee by motor.

She and her husband arrived in England on 18 May 1921, having sailed from Calcutta on the ship 'The City of Baroda'. The ship records indicate Mr Alston was a tea planter and gives approximate ages for him, Tiny, and their two children, a daughter (aged 4), and a son (aged 2).

Weeks later Tiny played Wimbledon-losing a 1st match in the main draw in singles and the mixed with her husband. George never again entered Wimbledon, concentrating on cricket where he gained some fame.

From 1926 to 1932 Tiny tried to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon. In 1929 she entered the US Championships. Mrs G.D.H. Alston won the Ceylon Championships in 1920 '21 '22 '24 '25 '29 '30. This suggests the couple took frequent trips back and forth from Europe to Ceylon.

A notable match for Mrs Alston was in 1927. At Stamford Hill in London she lost 6-3 6-3 to Helen Wills. Wills was undefeated from 1927 to 1933, so this match in retrospect would have been memorable for her.

Nedra Salam became the first native Ceylonese to win her nationals title in 1934, beating Mrs Alston in the semis that year. This is the last record we have of Tiny playing a tennis tournament.

Re: Bio Test for LKK

ALVAREZ, JUDY
United States
Born 2 April 1943
Married Frederick “Fred” Campbell, circa 1964-1965 (by 22 August 1965) Divorced in October 1968 in Hillsborough County, Florida
[Active: circa 1960-1966, 1970-71,1974]

A Floridian who achieved success in the early 1960s, she felt discouraged and gave up tennis until the Slims circuit in the 1970s. Judy had her best win over Multiple slam winner Darlene Hard at the Dixie tournament in 1963.

[From the Judy Alvarez thread]

For a first-round doubles match, Alvarez and partner Carol Caldwell were put on famed Centre Court, right after a Rod Laver singles match. Alvarez looked ready, as she walked back to the service line to begin the match. Except for one thing. She had left her racket at her chair.

"When it was obvious I didn't have my racket, you could hear all this mumbling,'' Alvarez said. "Anyway, I got my racket and as I walked back out, I held it up so everyone could see it. Everyone applauded. Carol and I lost, but the crowd was behind us the whole time.''
For Alvarez, 1963 forever will be bittersweet. She beat fellow Americans Billie Jean King, Darlene Hard and Donna Fales, only to be left off the Wightman Cup squad. Crushed by what she considered a political and perhaps discriminatory decision - Cubans weren't exactly commonplace in tennis - Alvarez quit the tour. She was ranked No. 6 in the U.S. at the age of 21.
Declared a pro by the USTA on January 20, 1966. The reason cited was her paid position at Tampa Carrollwood Golf and Tennis Club. Judy was ranked #5 in the US in 1965. She was the RU in a St Petersburg event in 1970, more or less ending her career in 1971, though she shows up in 1974 in local Florida events.

In the late 1970s Alvarez dominated 35 and over events. Eventually she operated her own tennis academy in Tampa, which she later sold.

Titles:

Trinidad in 1964, Clearwater in 1971 and Vero Beach in 1972.

The first Australian woman to play at Wimbledon in 1919 (where she made the mixed doubles semi-final).

[From Gee Tee]

Lily Addison became known as a tennis player of note in 1904 when she and Doctor Eric Pockley won the Victorian mixed doubles championship.

In 1906 she won the Victorian singles title, defeating the four-time champion Lorna Gyton. She won this title again from 1908 to 1911 and amazingly one more time in 1921 (aged 36). She also won state singles titles of NSW (1910) and SA (1906, 1908-1910) and represented Victoria in the traditional team matches against NSW and SA.

After her brother and occasional mixed doubles partner, JJ Addison, was killed in action during World War I, she served as a nurse in Salonika.
In 1919, she became possibly the first Australian woman to compete at Wimbledon, reaching the second round of singles and the semi-finals of the mixed doubles.

In the 1920s she became Matron at Geelong Colleg and though her play became less frequent, she was still good enough to be ranked #5 in the Victorian state tennis rankings of January 1925
