Traditionally held in spring, but from 1926 to 1938 swapped date with "London Covered Court Championships" and was held in october. After WWII it continued to be played in autumn until 1958, when began playing again in february or march. From 1963 in autumn again.
The Challenge Round was abolished in 1923. An asterisk (*) indicates that the defending champion did not take part in the tournament, the match in question therefore being an All-Comers’ Final.
In 1924 was merged with "London Covered Court Championships" held in October, the winners succeeding to both titles.
In 1968 was also a leg of the "Dewar Cup" series.
The first edition of this tournament was known as the "Eastern Zone Championships". The East German Closed Championships were usually held in late July/early August, outdoors, on clay. Between 1954 and 1980, the singles events at the East German Closed Championships were held 23 times at the Leipziger Sport-Club (Leipzig 1901) in Leipzig, Saxony.
