Re: The Official Married Names Thread

The entry for Mabel Davy previously included in this thread was incorrect. It was as follows:

MABEL HANNAH DAVEY
United Kingdom
Born circa 1900
Died 1972
Married Robert C. Clayton, 1916
--

The corrected entry looks like this:

MABEL HOPE DAVY
United Kingdom
Born 10 October 1896
Died 22 July 1952
Married Robert Cecil Clayton, 1916; died 11 December 1951
--

Mabel's maiden name was spelt Davy, not Davey. She was born in London. In later years the Claytons lived in Cairo, Egypt, although Robert died at sea, while Mabel's death is recorded as having occurred in Benghazi, Libya.

DALAILLE NICHOLAS

Born
Married Robert Anthony John "Bob" Hewitt, 1964
--

Australian by birth, Bob Hewitt moved to South Africa soon after his marriage, and later represented his new homeland on the international tennis scene. In recent years he has been the subject of sexual abuse allegations made by several women who claim he abused them when they were minors and he was their coach.

CATHERINE MAY PRENDERGAST
United Kingdom
Born 1865
Died
Married Charles Prideaux Triscott, 17 November 1884
--

The little-known tennis player born Catherine Prendergast married fellow tennis player Charles P. Triscott in Morar, India. He was a career soldier and served in Afghanistan and Burma as well as in India. For more information on him, see here: http://www.dnw.co.uk/medals/auctiona...so?itemid=3669

Both Charles and Catherine took part in the South of England Championships tournament at Eastbourne in 1893.

The Triscotts had two children, both girls: Dorothy and Ella. Catherine's exact date and place of birth and date and place of death are uncertain.

Re: The Official Married Names Thread

New information on Rosie Berthet-per American Lawn Tennis I found her spouse's name, date, and place of wedding.

BERTHET, ROSIE
France
Played the French in 1932
Married Jacques Saoutchik on 3 April 1933 in Paris.

She played the French with her Brother "Benny" (or Beni) Berthet. His proper name may have been Rene. Children's Day at the French Open was called Benny Berthet Day for a while.

The NYT mentions that her mother was from New York. Beni and Rosie married their spouses in a double ceremony in a Parisian synagogue. Beni wed a Mlle Oonagh Knox-Leet.

Re: The Official Married Names Thread

Two new ones-though I haven't yet cracked the identity of Mrs HC Hextall.

-----------------------------------------------------------
HEXTALL, Mrs Henry Cecil (nee ????)
United Kingdom
Married Henrey Cecil (1888- September1967) between 1911 and 1919.

Usually listed as Mrs HC Hextall. Henry Cecil fought in the Great War and was a cricket player of note. He was listed a single in the 1911 census. The first mention of Mrs HC was in 1919. Henry married a Clare E Marten in March of 1953, but this is clearly a remarriage. Mrs Hextall was also involved in dog breeding. The couiple settled in Sussex.

HEXTALL, JOAN (Joan Margaret Hextall) United Kingdom
Born 09 February 1900
Died April to June of 1972
Married (1) John B Barret circa January-March 1924 in Kensington, Middlesex
Married (2) Philip J Ashton circa January-March 1934 in Paddington, London.

Mrs HC Hextall’s sister in law. Her parents Henry Hyde Hextall and Cecily are the same as Henry Cecils’

Muriel was still being called Mrs Hextall as late as August 1935, but I don't know what happened to her after that. According to the London "Times", H. Cecil Hextall married Clare E. Marten, "quietly in London", on 2 January 1953.

Interseting. I notice in the New York Times that the paper doesn't hesitate to insert "divorcee" or "formerly married to" into wedding notices if a previos marriage existed. Would I be correctr in guessing the London Times is more reticent?

Generally, yes, although at some point the London "Times" did start regularly carrying details of divorces as well births, marriages, deaths, etc.

Re: The Official Married Names Thread

AGNETA MAUD TABOR [---> Recheck first name]
United Kingdom
Born 10 May 1862
Died 8 October 1933
Married Henry Hawley Shaw, 3 January 1893
--

Agneta Tabor played in the women's singles event at Wimbledon in 1886 when the event in question was only three years old. She reached the All-Comers' Final before losing to Blanche Bingley, who went on to win the title for the first time.

Two of Agneta's brothers, George and Arthur, played in the Wimbledon singles event in the years 1878-80. They were three of the children of the Reverend Robert Stammers Tabor, a graduate of Cambridge University, England, and his first wife, Mary Dolman.

Agneta played little competitive lawn tennis, most likely because at that time it was thought unseemly for a lady to take part in competitive sports.
