Re: The Official Married Names Thread
Great finds Jimbo!
And I found a couple more:
Clark, Ethel Sargeant
Born February 1885 in Philadelphia, PA
Married Hoxie Harrison Smith on 11 May 1914
Most often listed as Mrs H Harrison Smith.
Played the US Nationals in 1913 as Miss Clark and 1914-15 as Mrs Smith. Much better known in later years as someone who promoted tennis in Philadelphia. The Harrison Smiths were “Mainline” Philadelphians, and foundations exist in both Eleanor and Hoxie’s names. The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Tennis Center at Penn State-Brandywine, completed in 1992, contains eight courts, two of which are lighted for night-time play. It was funded by a major grant from the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Trust.
She was a prominent member of Philadelphia society and her love of tennis led to her establishing the United States Lawn Tennis Association Girls’ Sportsmanship Trophy and the Middle States Lawn Tennis Association Tournament. The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund, formed in 1977 from her estate (managed by Wachovia Bank, N.A.), benefits organizations located in Southeastern Pennsylvania, with primary emphasis on serving community needs in Delaware County.
