Draw notes:

Mrs Docker, Miss Haymen, Mrs Jackson and Miss Kelly all hail from Queensland. Many of the unkwown male players in this year's event probably also hailed from Queensland.

*Mrs JL Briggs=nee Phyllis Moxon

*Margaret Haymen (see note below for Roe)

*GeeTee notes that Miss W Kelly probably equals Winifred "Winnie" Kelly.

*Emily Dawson Roe (nee Haymen) married Arthur Stanley Roe on 22 January 1917. The official site incorrectly uses "Rose". Aussie papers list Mrs Roe as Mrs AS Roe. Judith (born by 1928), the only daughter of Dr and Mrs A.S. Roe, was married in 1948 to Eric Russell. The 3 Haymen daughters were the children of M. G. (Montague Granville) Haymen (died 1941), director of a Queenland Bank. Margaret Haymen (who wed Charles Clark (1902-1965) on 12 December 1928) and Nell Hayman (married to Englishman Timothy Patrick Honnor on 11 July 1937). Emily is our "Mrs Roe" in this draw. "Miss Haymen" is the second daughter Margaret.is is less certain.

Mrs H Turner=nee Beryl Spowers

AL North=Dr Allan Lindsay "Dick" North.

-------------------------------------------------

Summary

Molesworth survived a match point against Lance in the semis. Lance's volleying won the first set 6-3 and her backhand was standing up well. Molesworth switched attack in the 2nd set to Lance's stronger wing, the forehand, which broke up Lance's rhythm. Winning the 2nd set 6-4 and streaking to 5-2, Lance made a final stand to reach match point at 6-5 40-30. On this point she played a near perfect drop shot, in which Molesworth charged in, just reached the ball on spooned it over for a clear winner. Lance's chance was gone, and Molesworth won the 3rd 8-6. Her opponent was again Boyd who recovered from a 1st set 1-6 beating to lead 3-1 40-30. But an appalling line call against Boyd demoralised her and Molesworth shot to 5-3. Despite a last desperate effort to retrieve the deficit, Boyd lost 6-1 7-5.

Mixed champion Horrie Rice was 51 years of age, finalist St John was 44.

Re: 1923 Australian Draw

Hi Rollo, here are a few bits:

The Championships were played at the Milton Courts, which are located in the inner-Brisbane suburb of Auchenflower.

It would be Margaret G HAYMEN (born 1904) who played as Nell C HAYMEN (born 1912) is too young to have been a serious participant.

Edith Beryl (Beryl) ROSSER born 1899

Mrs Docker was from NSW, not Qld

Lisle C TERREY born 1889 in Kiama, NSW was a contemporary of 'Barney' Utz at Sydney University. He played in Southern France and England (including Wimbledon) in early 1925, touring with his wife (nee Eileen SLY).

Lionel Emmanuel OXENHAM
Leslie Garfield PLANE
Cecil Bertram 'Bert' ST JOHN
Leonard THURLOW

Mixed champion Horrie Rice was 51 years of age, finalist St John was 44.

Think that's all I can add at the moment.

So modest a sentence when this is a goldmine of information GT

Was Leonard Thurlow the brother of "Alf" Thurlow?

and Keyden Irving (not Winter) is correct?

Re: 1923 Australian Draw

^ Yes, it seems they were brothers, but a fair age between them - Alfred born 1884 and Leonard 1899. May Thurlow (b 1888) who also had some success on the court is a sister. Mrs Thurlow popped out 5 kids in 8 years but then seems to have gone on strike between May and Len..

Keyden Irving (born 1894) is listed in Qld Birth, Deaths & Marriages (named after her mother Keyden) but no listing of any Winter Irving I can find in Qld(even though that doesn't always guarantee anything). The name Keyden's also mentioned in a number of newspaper reports covering social tennis events with other well known players/family names. So I guess I'm fairly confident, but wouldn't bet my life!

There were a bunch of sisters Margaret Helen (Mrs Frederick MEAD from 1925), Joan (Mrs FW HEATH from 1925) and Quentin (Mrs E de LITTLE from 1928) WINTER-IRVING who played club tournaments and at least one played in the Victorian titles in Melbourne,. They seem to be from a well-to-do horse-racing family, but don't appear to be a truly elite players. They had a cousin who also played tennis - Janet WINTER-IRVING (Mrs Keith TOLHURST from 1930).

One of them does seem to have played in the 1924 Australian mixed (not Quentin), but I can't identify which.

Re: 1923 Australian Draw

Thanks GeeTee!

Do we know if the Swayne here was an E. Swayne or a V. Swayne?

Eric Swayne=E Swayne.

Re: 1923 Australian Draw

^ He's both!

It's Vincent Edward SWAYNE. His brother Wallis Eric SWAYNE was six years younger and they occasionally played doubles together.

I see. Since the Trove results for 1923 usually list a V Swayne I'll go with Vincent Swayne (Qld)

Thank you sir.

Finished and moving on to 1924. Note that The Grand Slam book has a first name of Corinne for Mrs Gould.

Re: 1923 Australian Draw

Per this page I am strongly convinced that Miss Hawthorn is Miss Dorothy Hawthorn.

Re: 1923 Australian Draw

^ The doubles partner was Marjorie BYRAM (Mrs Jack LIPSCOMBE from 26 March 1924) not BRYAN.

Byram (born 1896) was a few years older than Dorothy Hawthorn (born 1899) so there's a slight chance it might be Dorothy's older sister Alice (born 1895).

ETA coupla others:

"AL North" = Dr Allan Lindsay 'Dick' NORTH
"A Bell" = Alice BELL
"Miss Kelly' = W KELLY (probably Winifred 'Winnie' KELLY)
"A Illington" = Dr Harold ILLINGWORTH
"WHW Smith" = Walter Harold SMITH
"Mrs Jackson" = Florence Emelda FINCH (Mrs Frank JACKSON from 1923)
