Women's tennis results threads, 1878-1917
This thread contains links to all of the original threads I first created in 2010, featuring women's doubles, women's singles and mixed doubles results from the years 1878-1917 inclusive.
The results are mainly from finals, but the complete singles draw is included for some events, e.g. the first women's singles event at Wimbledon, in 1884.
In addition to the results, information on some of the players, tournaments, important developments in (lawn) tennis, etc., is also included. Wherever possible, when a player marries, reference is made back to her maiden name the first time her married name is mentioned. A player's nationality is also provided when she (or he) is playing abroad. The only real exception to this rule is for Irish players playing in Great Britain because Ireland was effectively under British rule during the forty years in question; the same rule thus applies to players from Great Britain playing in Ireland.
The main sources for these results include the British publications "The Field", "Pastime", "Lawn Tennis and Badminton" and "Ayres' Almanack". Newspapers used include "The Times" (of London), "The Irish Times", "The New York Times", "The Argus", "The Sydney Morning Herald" and "Le Figaro". I also used a number of the American lawn tennis books published annually by Wright and Ditson and Spalding's. The German-language publications "Spiel und Sport" and, especially, "Der Lawn-Tennis-Sport" and "Lawn-Tennis und Golf" were very good sources for Continental European results.
The format used throughout the threads is basic and invariable.
