A Neccessary Spectacle
While I was at the Hall of Fame in Newport last year I bought this wonderful book about the Battle of the Sexes in 1973. It was written in circa 2004 by the esteemed NY times sports journalist Selena Roberts. It is a fantastic book and looks at the whole aetiology of the match, and how the Mothers Day Massacre led to the match with BJK. There are in depth contributions from Margaret Court, Larry King, Rosie Casals, Jack Kramer, etc etc. It is fantastic and looks at the early lifes of Court, Riggs and BJK. It also deals with BJKs sexuality and is the first interview that went into the details of that whole period and her partnership with Ilana Kloss. It is a book I admired for the wider social issues it tackled and its wonderful research into the game of the early 70s. Would be great to discuss with others who have read, or want to read, this book. Would also be good to look again at the Battle of the Sexes itself and what went wrong with Margaret that awful day.
