Who was more graceful on the court: Evonne Goolagong or Maria Bueno>

I will admit, I have only seen (years after the fact) one full match of Maria (on tape), and a few points, and snippets of her in action during her prime. On the other hand, I have seen allot of Evonne's matches (live, on TV, and tape) and while I may be biased in my opinion, or just haven't seen enough of Maria - I would have to say IMO, it would be Evonne Goolagong! But, what do the rest of you say?

It's a tough call but I also give a slight edge to Evonne, mainly because she was just that little more feminine in everything she did. Even when she walked, it was very dainty. Maria was incredibly balletic but had more power than Evonne IMO. When Evonne struck the ball it was like she was caressing it ... whereas Maria tended to hit through it a little more razor like.

Still, both absolutely two of the most elegant players to ever grace the court. Mandlikova is another who comes to mind.

Fave recent players: .. Seles .. Hingis .. Serena .. Venus .. Federer .. Roddick .. Hewitt .. Haas .. Rafter .. Safin .. Radwanska ..
60s/70s: Evonne Goolagong .. Francoise Durr .. Chris Evert .. Margaret Court .. Nancy Richey .. Maria Bueno .. Billie-Jean King .. Lesley Turner .. Virginia Wade .. Ken Rosewall .. Rod Laver .. Bjorn Borg ..
Entertainers: .. Diana Ross .. Dionne Warwick .. Shirley Bassey .. Randy Crawford .. Burt Bacharach .. ABBA .. Woody Allen .. Maggie Smith .. Gena Rowlands .. Judy Davis .. Heath Ledger .. Little Britain ..
Inspiration: .. Jeshua Ben Josepth .. Conversations with God .. Abraham with Esther & Jerry Hicks .. P'taah ..

Too difficult to compare grace.

But how could you not like Sunshine Supergirl Evonne Goolagong?! Mesmerizing (and sometimes maddening). But the most graceful player on and off the court. Ever!

Great idea for a thread. From what I have seen they were both beautiful on the court although for me Goolagongs was more of a gentle artistic beauty, Bueno that little bit more of a powerful dominant beauty. But what artists, the amount of people I know who never really follow tennis intently but remember with fondness Bueno and Goolagong is testimant to their brilliance. My dad still thinks on form Bueno was the best player he ever saw in the womens game.

CraigHappy New Year and good call. I think Mandlikova absolutely belongs in this thread of VERY elite players.

Now there is something we agree on fella. However I still think Austin should have beaten her in the Wimbledon semis of 80. I must say though at the time I was roaring my ten year old lungs out for Goolagong.

Funny you mention her, because I was watching the 1987 Aussie final last night and two things stand out in my mind.

1. On the first point Hana hits a magnificent backhand overhead winner, the signature shot of Bueno and Goolagong that displays the ultimate in grace.

2. Late in the first set Fred Stolle and Cliff Drysdale compare Hana to Bueno for her grace.

What's not to love about Evonne? I suspect though that if we grew up in a different era Bueno's support might be more even. Most us (myself included) haven't seen enough of Bueno. Plus there's an emotional comnnection our generation has to Evonne.

You're dating yourself Iain! I'll go ahead and date myself too. I was 15 in 198

I was also rooting for Evonne of course.

I'll date myself - I was 22 in 1980. And my birthday is July 30th, the day before Evonne's!

As for Hana, she was a great mover, and often fluid on her shots on the court, but IMO I don't think she was as graceful as Evonne, or Ms. Bueno.

I'll date myself too - In 1980, I had 4 years left for my birth.

LOL Hingis-Seles. You're the baby of the bunch. As for Josus and the rest of us-we are forever young

Here's a pic of Bueno

RolloThat is interesting because of course Drysdale and Stolle were contemporaries of Bueno. I see Hana as more Maria than Evonne.

I think that Bueno would have appealed particularly to gay men. Apart from her sexuality- and that Im not sure about- there was the sheer drama and Greta Garbo quality about her. I remember Angela Mortimer was shocked at how aloof Maria could be from her fans in Brazil.
