Who's who in international tennis (1983)

I was shopping this afternoon in some second hand bookstores and found this interesting book edited in the UK at the beginning of the 80's.

It is basically like a WTA/ATP players guide that highlights the records of every relevant player back in these times, focusing also in the so called in the introduction as would-be champions (mostly never heard again )

The book offers some interesting stuff about not so well known players. As description of each players is not very long I thought I'd post it here so we could discuss about them and see if you guys can remember all. There are some of these girls I honestly never heard before

If this turns to be a very popular book and lots of people already have it please let me know so you can spare me all the typing I'll post a couple of players per day or so.

In the book, after the player's name there is their career highlights. I'll just copy the info but if someone is really interested in the results just ask and I will copy them. Also, bear in mind that this book was edited in 1983 so when talking about some players they only refer up to this date.

But I, being poor, have only my dreams
I have spread my dreams under your feet
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams

She was nominated for the Women's Tennis Association's Most Promising Newcomer Award in 1979. Enjoys writing and listening to music. Both her sisters, Judy and Gigi, are tennis players

Leslie Allen

The daughter of Broadway actress Sarah Allen, Leslie was sponsored for a time by American actor Bill Cosby. A lively, articulate and intelligent girl, Leslie graduated with top honours in speech communication from the University of Southern California in 1977. She is also an expert on fashion and worked for a while as assistant to a New York designer. She is a natural athlete who was offered a track schoolarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She enjoys art and jazz in her spare time.

Re: Who's who in international tennis (1983)

I checked out this book from a library a time or two but don't own it. I like the personal bits-perhaps Lea would take that one comment REALLY personally.

Leslie Allen had that big year back in 1981 and then sort of drifted off. She had a good serve and volley. Was she the one who got into it with Eliot Teltcher in a mixed one year and got so scared (or scarred, take your pick) she dropped off tour?

I remember that one,Rollo. It was a mixed doubles match at The French Open.
Teltscher was a total dick. He seemed to attack her for no reason. There was a pic of him screaming at LA on a changeover while she was sitting down.

Pam Shriver: What is your worst memory of The US Open?
Martina Navratilova: Losing to you,bitch

Re: Who's who in international tennis (1983)

Well, Leslie Allen is doing good work these days through her foundation Here is her website: http://www.leslieallen.net/index.html

I have this book; I received it as a gift many years ago and it was my first book about tennis. I used to enjoy going through the various biographies; most of the players had already retired by the time I first read it so I was initially unfamiliar with most of them. Lots of great pics too. I liked how they listed out players' records at the Grand Slams and other tournaments. In the days before the Internet, I used to try to piece together Grand Slam tournament draws (from the quarter-final stage) by reviewing this book.

I think I have that book somewhere in a box!!It is not so great for indepth but does summarise their careers well and if I remember the photographs in the book were excellent. It was a good year, and one that I will remember fondly due to many factors, not least that I could shave!!!

There are a few names that I remember well!!!!Leslie Allen I have said before could have been a great player but faded badly after a great indoor season in 1981. Antonopolis was a fine player- junior Wimbledon champion in 1977 were she also got to the last 16 in 1977 main event losing 0 and 4 to Barker!!

I think that she was already disolusioned anyway, the screaming from Teltscher the final straw. Apparently he was racist as well!!It was the final of the French mixed doubles between Strode and Allen v Teltscher and Jordan.B. He was a nightmare apparently.

That is really appalling Pat. I wonder what made Teltscher behave like that? Allen never struck me as a confrontational person and she must have been horrified.

Oh that is cute- amazing what we did for the love of tennis in the days before the internet!!!!. Allen was a superb player and I am glad that she is doing well now in her vocation. It is easy to forget now after the legends that are the Williams and the great careers of Garrison and McNeil, but when Allen won in Detroit in 81 it was a huge news story. Here for the first time since Althea Gibson was an African American winning a major tour title- she never followed it through though.
