Anyhow, Asa was a decent player, pretty good when she was on but helpless when up against the very best. I was surprised when she cracked the top 30 in singles.

Re: Asa Svensson (Sweden)

I used to enjoy watching her play.

She rarely troubled the top players, but always competed well and made her opponents beat her.

She seemed drawn to play Martinez at almost every slam in the early rounds, she used to find Conchita's topspin very difficult. Her best wins are those over Williams, Sabatini (x2), Coetzer and Novotna.

But Svensson will always be able to tell her kids and grandkids that she beat Venus Williams. Be kind and let her have that! This reminds me of something that Jill Hetherington said during an early 90's Canadian Open commentary (paraphrasing): "I beat Steffi when she was 13 but it was more my tour experience than my game that won me the match. I took advantage of Steffi's youth." No harm done.

Re: Asa Svensson (Sweden)

In much the same way that Kimberly Po will be able to tell her grandkids that she beat Serena Williams - from memory, it was Williams' first main draw pro match, and Po won in Moscow 6-4 7-6.

Unfortunately for Po, they did play a few years later when Serena was defending US Open Champ, and Serena got some sweet revenge, a 6-1 6-0 deciison in 41 minutes.

Exactly what I meant. Thanks for the follow-up. Virginia Wade said this in her commentary a few times and I agree with her. When you're playing a phenom in their first year and it might be your only to chance to beat them, you should take it so that you'll be able to tell your grandkids, etc. It's still a win! haha
