Injured Hingis pulls out of German Open
HAMBURG, May 5 2002 - Martina Hingis has pulled out of the German Open starting on Monday because of a sprained left ankle, organisers said on Sunday.
The former world number one Swiss lost to top seed Venus Williams in the semi-finals of the Hamburg Cup on Saturday and then teamed up with Barbara Schett to beat Daniela Hantuchova and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in Sunday's doubles final.
Hingis would have been seeded third in the claycourt event.
The top seed in Berlin is American Jennifer Capriati with Belgian Kim Clijsters, who upset Venus Williams in the Hamburg final on Sunday, seeded second. Belgian Justine Henin is now seeded third.
