Wow is that accurate? I had no idea Virginia made her debut at Wimbledon. Talking about learning something new everyday.

In Ruzici's case, I enjoyed her legs way better than her results. She was gorgeous! And a good tennis player to boot! The one player who tended to go for TOO much when she was close to closing it out against the better players. It was a nice contrast to playing it safe, but it hurt her more times than not.

I doubt this is correct. The ITF and WTA databases are wonderful sources of info. But in some cases like Virginia's, their results are incomplete. So by all means if you can add in other results that are left out, please do so.

Thanks!

Right. Tennis Corner shows that she played FedCup and The French Open before her 73 Wimbledon result.

She went 3-0 in FedCup but lost in the first round of the French to Natalie Fuchs. So I take it the French was her debut WTA event.

Thanks Jakeev! Is that site's address www.tenniscorner.net? I'm probably going to keep putting up as much as I can. And then try to fill in from other databases like this one. But I wasn't aware of that one, so thanks for pointing it out.

Also, I think the Fed Cup has its own site. So I will look there to find the opponents and scores for her 1973 matches.

I think she also played and won a tournament in Stuttgart, Germany before the French of 1973. Will check if my memory is playing tricks on me when I get home.

Thanks guys! Keep the info. and pics about Virginia coming. When I'm done with the Hana thread, I'll turn my attention back here to do Vergie some justice.

In fact the Stuttgart title came in May 1974, not 1973, and I don't know whom she beat to win it.

Here's a summary of the other titles I know she won:

1975 Tennis Week Open/Sth Orange Classic beat Marianaa Simionescu 61 61

1977 Florida Fed. Open Palm Harbour St Petersb'g beat Laura Dupont 46 64 62

1978 FRENCH OPEN beat Mima Jausovec 62 62
Swiss Open beat Petra Delhees 62 62
Austrian Open beat Sylvia Hanika 64 63
Brighton BMW Challenge beat Betty Stove 57 62 75

1980 Swiss Open beat Sylvia Hanika 64 63
Swedish Open beat Nina Bohm 62 75
Austrian Open beat Hana Mandlikova 36 61 retired
Utah Salt Lake City Women's Games beat Ivanna Madruga 61 63

1982 Monte Carlo Open (Kim Cup) beat Bonnie Gadusek 62 76
Austrian Open beat Lea Plchova 62 62
USCC Championships beat Helena Sukova 62 60

1983 Swedish Open beat Carin Anderholm 62 62
VS Detroit beat Kathy Jordan 46 64 62

1985 Austrian Open (Elektra Cup) beat Mima Jausovec 62 63

First Round: Ruzici d. Suzana Gesteira (Brazil) 6-1 6-2
Second Round: Ruzici d. Christina Sandberg (Sweden) 6-3 8-6
Quarterfinals: Judith Gohn/Ruzici d. Wade/Joyce Williams (GBR) 7-5 6-2 (Ruzici did not play a singles rubber in the quarters)
Semifinals: Ruzici d. Brenda Kirk (South Africa) 4-6 6-3 6-3

Best left-right combination by a German (and that includes Max Schmeling): Steffi Graf. All she did in 1987 was knock Navratilova out of #1 and try to knock Evert out of the sport. (Mike Lupica in "The Best and Worst of Tennis in 1987", World Tennis)

"A couple of years ago, we nicknamed Steffi Graf's forehand 'Jaws'. And that music would go perfectly when she starts running in to the net, swarming on that little ball." (JoAnne Russell, during the 1988 Wimbledon final between Graf and Navratilova)

We really ought to have some audio files of Ruzici's commentary on the site. Her accent is a joy to listen to.
