Julie Halard Decugis forever!

A thread to pay tribute to the official greatest player of all time.

I shall pop in here from time to time and lament the fact that she isn't around anymore.

Miss you Julie!

The Only player to retire as World Number 1 in Doubles!

Reached 12 doubles finals winning 10 in her last year on the circuit

One of only 6 players to beat Steffi Graf on home soil, and she almost did it a second time losing 7-5 in the 3rd set.

Had a 14 single win match streak end when she lost to Coetzer at the 1999 Australian Open

Reached a career high singles ranking of 7

Won 12 WTA Singles Titles, 16 Doubles Titles

She won two Tier II events, Paris (beating two top 5 players in a row) and Eastbourne.

She actually won every grass tournament except Wimbledon! Having also won Birmingham and Rosmalen.

She beat Hingis twice in Doubles in her final year which is almost unheard of and one of those was a 6-0 6-3 thrashing!

**I might have got some of the above info wrong, it was all done off the top of my head!**

I'm still hoping for a Julie comeback, She's only 31! She's had her healthy baby and with Arnaud still coaching and travelling I don't see why Julie can't join him and start at least a doubles comeback either hehe

Im not much good on facts and figure so I dunno...

But she had a unique game, a wonderful approach, and was just plain great to watch.

Its sad that she never attracted the large following that many players seem to...perhaps becuase she was just one of a group of successful French players, her shyness of the limelight meant she got lost in the crowd.

Its a shame that most of the time we got to see her on TV was when facing a tall order in a GS...it meant we seldom saw her at her best...

But her wins in Paris, in Japan, in Eastbourne and Birmingham were all great, and memorable in their own ways...and to win the US Open doubles crown with the lovely Ai Sugiyama, in her last yearon tour...on her birthday...was the icing on the cake.

If I'm not mistaken, she's the only player to win all 3 of the current grass events (other than Wimbledon). That would make her a class lass on grass.

She's beaten Graf, Davenport, and Sanchez-V after they had reached #1.

Interesting points Brian...its interesting that her success of Grass came late in her career, until then I would have said it was one of her weakest surfaces. I think ultimately she could do a solid job on any court, and she became an all court player.

The first time I saw Julie on TV, was when she beat Sanchez at 92 Wimbledon, on her way to the last 16.

I think its a big underachievement that she never bettered (or matched?) that result at Wimbledon again.

If the revised seedings sytem had been in place, I think her GS results would have been better, she didnt have the best luck in draws, and was often ranked just outside the top 16...a top 32 sytem would have done her a lot of good.

The year she lost to Stevenson represented her best chance to go far into the tournie...that loss still rankles.

A few pics of Julie from around the web...

Ive never thought photos quite do Julie justice...some people look better in photos than real life...but Julie is the opposite. She IS drop dead gorgeous, but few people realise it, having only seen a handful of pics of her.

More fool them.

What does the world know???

Nowt.

Yeah I wish I knew how to get my Julie pics to show up on here too, and use one as my avatar...

I have no comment about Julie's legs.

Except to politely concur that they are indeed very nice.

While Julie is not in the much improved American WTA game on Playstation 2...at least as far as I can gauge...

She does appear in the basic Euro version...but there arefew close ups and you'd have a hard time knowing it was her but still... It is.

She is listed as Julie Decugis on screen.

I found this mention of Juie and Ai's Doubles World Champs award....

Honoured for the first time as women's doubles World Champions, France's Julie Halard-Decugis and Japan's Ai Sugiyama are proof that a strong off-court friendship improves on- court teamwork. Halard-Decugis said that she was "very happy to share this prize with my best friend Ai Sugiyama" to which her Japanese partner joked, "She retired at the end of last year but I'm still waiting for her to come back."

If only she did come back...what an amazing team they made.

Thanks for that pic too Gallfoa.

Julie and Ai's doubles year was amazing...while Ai was already an established force in doubles, Julie had always been a solid doubles player, who had never won the titles her talent deserved...it all changed in that one year.

What we in Britian wouldn't do for a girl who could play half as well she Julie...

She would have been such a star if she'd been English...

But with her private and shy nature, perhaps it was best for her to be one of the crowd.

So under-rated though and so under-appreaciated...not fair!

Julie, you are still the best ever!
